Emmett Rodes Obituary

Emmett "Yancy" Rodes Aug. 2, 1919 - Sept. 8, 2010 Resident of Livermore, CA Yancy was most proud of his service to his Country, having served 21 years in the United States Navy, retiring as a Chief Boatswain Mate. He served throughout the entirety of the Pacific Theatre of World War II and was one of the last remaining survivors of the attack on Pearl Harbor. After his service, Yancy spent over 20 years working at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. A native of West "By God" Virginia and a member of the AAHMES Shriners Temple of Livermore, Yancy was a life-long, die-hard fan of the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics. He was a generous and caring man, with a great sense of humor who was loved by all that knew him. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, neighbors and his 6 A.M. coffee buddies. Yancy is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Evelyn; cousins "Punk" Robinson and husband Earl, Vera Perryman, Herman Paganini and wife Shirley; nephew Albert Pura and wife Grace; nieces Barbara Sterling, Kay Hess and husband Ralph Wozniak and Alisa Pura and husband Michael Suckow. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at the Veterans Memorial Building, 522 South L Street, Livermore, California, on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at 11 A.M. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the two charities that were nearest and dearest to Yancy; Shriners Hospitals for Children and the National Hemophilia Foundation.

Yancy, Bill and I will miss your lust for life and for all those wonderful stories you told. We were always amazed every time we heard that you were still driving to Reno. Good for you! Nothing stopped you from living and doing what you wanted to do!

Uncle Yancy, you will be missed. We love you and we will miss you. I will never forget your generosity and humor. One of the many things I will miss is your birthday cards to me when I was growing up and to the cards you send to James and Grace. I am sure that your buddys have welcomed you home. Thank you for your service to our country. Love aways, Jim 'Jimmy' Sterling and family
