Phyllis Multhauf Obituary

Phyllis Ann Multhauf Teacher, helper, friend Phyllis Multhauf, long-time Alameda resident and teacher in the Oakland Public Schools, died Sept. 16th. Born in 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa, she was orphaned at age 8, so moved to Minnesota to join relatives. There she completed her education and began her teaching career. In 1959 she moved to Washington DC, where her brother Robert was living, and then to Japan, where she taught at a US Air Force base. She returned to the US in 1962, settling first in Oakland and then in Alameda (Islandia). She taught in several schools and grade levels, retiring in 1995. Phyllis loved to travel, and did, throughout Europe, in Australia and NZ, and across the US. She was also a dog lover and owner; volunteered often, including with Alameda Hospital; enjoyed and entertained her many friends; and was a faithful parishioner (and Greeter) at St Albert the Great Church in Alameda. She is survived by her cousins Jane Hayes, Elwood Multhauf and Kathy Steele; sister-in-law Lettie Multhauf; and many friends, of whom the closest was Bernice Bradley of Alameda. A Memorial Mass will be held at St Albert's on Friday October 8, at 11:00 a.m., to be followed by a reception at the Church.
