Verdinal McKean Obituary

Verdinal T. McKean Resident of Alameda Beloved Husband of 56 years preceded by the death of Eloise Anne, survived by sons Verdinal C. McKean and Ronald E. McKean; daughters Janelle Huffman and Donna McKean; grandsons Stephen and John Huffman, Verdinal A and Evan McKean, and granddaughter Emily McKean; sons-in-law Sebert Huffman and Timothy Brown; daughters-in-law Roberta McKean and Ellen McKean; and sister Joan Brennan. Verd was a life-long music-lover and musician. He held a Masters Degree in Music from San Francisco State University and taught instrumental music in the San Francisco Public schools for 40 years. He continued to perform regularly into his eighties, playing the trombone, bass, and piano in dance bands at local clubs. His music career began in the army during WWII, when he served with the 164th Infantry Regiment of the 23rd Infantry ("Americal") Division in the Pacific Theater. A trombonist with the 294th army ground forces band during the war, Verd was fond of saying in later years "the trombone saved my life." Verd attended army reunions into his eighties. A patriot and devotee of John Wayne, Verd had an affinity for all things Western. He was interested in Native American lore and was a friend of nature and the national parks. A lifelong resident of Alameda, Verd was a member of Native Sons and the Elks Club. Verd had a formidable memory and a keen sense of organization. He loved a bargain! He was also known for his wry humor. Informed, in the latter years of his life, that he had lost vision in one eye, he asked a nurse if this meant that he would now be able to wear an eye patch like John Wayne in True Grit. Like the Duke, Verd let a rough exterior hide a gentle and generous heart. He was his own person. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday October 5th, 2010 at 2pm, at First Presbyterian Church of Oakland, 2619 Broadway, Oakland. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Verd's favorite charities: St. Labre Indian School, Disabled American Veterans, or the Nature Conservancy. Sorry for doing that twice, Donna - I thought it would appear instantly and then I read it takes 24 hours to post after review. I hope they only post one of my entries, not two!

Dear Donna & Family,
Your dad was one-of-a-kind! I had so much fun joking with him! Remember the time he played the piano & sang the old song "Laura" for me & it made me cry? It touched a place deep within me...and I think made me long for my dear dad, being a WWII vet like him.
I was so honored to be able to help you guys to get him home on hospice - where he really wanted to be! I am honored to be an honorary family member and don't take that honor lightly - I am here for you all - I know you know that.
I especially enjoyed spending time with Steve & Janelle, & Verde last night - and BOY does that Ronnie know how to tell a hilarious story about your dad! I seriously don't remember the last time I laughed that hard! Did you hear me wheezing?
What a lovely legacy your dad has left behind with his wonderful family.
Rest in peace, Verdinal. You're free.
We love you dearly, Donna.

To Donna & Family -

I really had a lot of fun kidding around with your dad and will never forget the day he played the piano & sang for me the old song "Laura" & remember how it made me cry? What a sap! He stirred something deep within me; I'm sure making me miss my own dear dad. It's been an honor to play such a close role with you & your brothers as we brought him home on hospice - and being an honorary family member is a role I don't take lightly. I am here for all of you & especially enjoyed time with Janelle & Steve last night - and the way Ronnie tells a story of your dad - I swear last night was the hardest I've laughed in I-don't-know-how-long! Look at the closeness and fellowship your dad has left in his wake. What a man. Rest in peace, Verde. I love you Donna & family.
Much Love

Dear Donna and Ron. I too am so sorry to hear of your dad's departure. I don't think we ever met but I talked to him briefly on the telephone and he was always kind and a bit of a character, much like my own dad who expired in 2003 also WWII Vet. Reading the obituary, I feel like he led an honorable and worthwhile life. I know both parents did a terrific job raising their children to be honorable people too. Thanks for taking such good care of your parents. Now they can be together and they will continue to support you in a different way. Love Christina and Laird Finnie.
