He was a fine man and an extraordinary teacher. I had more than one class with him. Informative and riveting teacher. I especially enjoyed his Baroque culture class and cried when I saw the artworks he described when I went to Europe just a few weeks later. I was so cheered whenever he crossed campus whistling the classics. Thank you for all the wonderful knowledge you passed down to so many and bless you and your family with peace.

Dan & I were both shocked and extremely saddened to hear of John's death. He was certainly worth knowing and we have many warm and sometimes hilarious memories of him. How terrible his son had gone before him. I'm sorry it wasn't possible to come to the memorial.

Many thanks to the many people who attended the memorial service today in Castro Valley. Your presence and many reminiscences warmed my heart. --M. Clare LePell
