Jose Santiago Obituary

Jose Ocampo Santiago, M.D. Feb. 5, 1921 Oct. 1, 2010 Resident of Castro Valley Jose (aka Peping, Papa, Lolo, Joe the Eskimo) passed away peacefully last Friday, at 89 years old, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Manila, Philippines, eldest son of Dr. Francisco S. Santiago and Concepcion Ocampo Santiago. Jose graduated from Ateneo High School in 1934, completed his pre-med degree at Ateneo de Manila University in 1938 and received his medical degree at University of Santo Tomas in 1946. After passing the Medical Board exam, he briefly practiced medicine but instead pursued a career in pharmaceutical sales for 25 years. In 1975, he moved his family from the Philippines to the US to provide them a brighter future. He worked at Temple University, PA for 15 years and moved to CA in 1991 to enjoy his retirement years with his wife and reunite with the majority of his children. He believed in the values of simple living, providing the best education for his children, and being the best husband to his wife. He enjoyed journaling important family events, and collecting miniature military models. One of his greatest passions was promoting the legacy of his father, a famous Filipino composer and father of Filipino Kundiman (masterpiece compositions include Pilipinas Kong Mahal, Ave Maria, Pakiusap, Anak ng Dalita). Jose is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Josefina Hizon Santiago; 9 children Marichi Panganiban (Homer), Bong (Baby), Vic (Ditas), Tito (Vangie), Dolly Dimayuga (Alan), Luping Perkins, Tony (Lulu), Celly Levine (Bruce), Bing (Terry); 25 grandchildren Gerry, Martha, Frances (Troy), Connie, Che-che, Missy, Josef, Vinny, Diane, Timothy, Dundee, Mimi (Reja), Aviane (Patrick), Astrid, Angela, Anthony, Joshua, Jarred, Marco, Anya, Michael (Sandy), Justin, Sonnie, Gabrielle, and Danielle; and 1 great-grandchild, Everly. Viewing and vigil will be held at Holy Angels Funeral Center in Hayward on Friday 10/8/2010 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm and Saturday 10/9/2010 10:00am to 4:00pm. A celebration Mass of his life will be held at All Saints Church in Hayward on Monday 10/11/2010 at 10:30am, followed by entombment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Hayward. For the few times I had the opportunity to meet up with Lolo, he always struck me as a kind, gentle man. He was always beside Lola, a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes - loving being around his kids, grandkids, and other family members. His quiet, dignified presence was very calming. He lived a full life, and his love will always be with you. Gather strength from the happy memories you share. He's in Heaven and taking care of you all from up above. Peace. Ethelyn

Oh that’s right, I had forgotten all about the miniature military models. I enjoyed looking at them. I remember him as a man who loved his wife. I liked visiting my friend Bing because between his Dad and Mom, they made for a very warm home
