Gertrude Canan Obituary

Gertrude "Rickey" Canan Nov. 29, 1920 - Oct. 10, 2010 Resident of Livermore Gertrude "Rickey" Canan passed away peacefully October 10, 2010, surrounded by family. Rickey was born in Currie, NY, graduated from Batavia High School in New York and went on to become a Registered Nurse, working in that position for 38 years. She married Joseph Roth in 1943 and had three children, Joan, Charles and Connie. In 1956, she married Robert Canan and had two more daughters, Lorrilynn and Jennifer. Robert preceded her in death in 1982. She moved to Livermore in 1959 and lived there until her death. Rickey was a caregiver in all aspects of her life, and her family and friends benefited from her kind and generous spirit. Never a harsh or mean word was heard from her. She enjoyed bowling, an occasional trip to play the slot machines, and shopping trips with the girls. Most of all, though, Rickey loved being with her family, always a quiet but joyful listener. All will feel her absence at family gatherings. During the last two years of her life, Rickey was lovingly cared for by Susan and Sal. The family is grateful for their gentle and constant attention. Rickey is survived by her children, Joan (Jim) Alviso, Charles (Karole) Roth, Connie (Bill) Duterte, Lorrilynn (Shelby) Conley, and Jennifer (Gary) Mazzurco; her grandchildren, Jenet Alviso, Jason (Treva) Alviso, Jerome (Barbie) Alviso, Kristopher Roth, Alex Roth, Lee Roth, Scott (Robyn) Duterte, Ben (Kristina) Duterte, and Annie Walden; and her great-grandchildren, Michael Parker, Jacob Alviso, Rebekah Alviso, Sarah Alviso, Chance Alviso, Savannah Alviso, Titus Alviso, Macy Alviso, Hailey Duterte, Brady Duterte and Grant Duterte. Her sister, Florence Mason of New York, also survives her. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010, 1:00 pm, at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Livermore, CA. The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Callaghan Mortuary (925) 447-2942
