Ann Mall Obituary
Ann Shoop Mall Jan. 8, 1935 - Oct. 19, 2010 Resident of Fremont Ann passed away peacefully at home from lung cancer on October 19, 2010 in Fremont, CA after 10 months of chemo and radiation therapy. She is survived by her husband Dr. Wayne Mall, a retired physician and her two younger brothers, John of Freeport, PA and Tom of Fort Lauderdale, FL. She is also survived by her daughter Mary McCarthy of Camarillo, CA, her son, Michael J. Mall of Livermore, CA and two stepdaughters Rhonda Adler of Longmont, CO and Margo Hoffman of Colorado Springs, CO. She has six grandchildren, Shauna and Shane Adler, Korin and Cory Hoffman, and Courtney and Jake Mall. She was born in Freeport, PA to Ruth and Everett Shoop. Everett was a fourth generation owner of a clothing store that remained in the family for five generations and became the oldest men's clothing store owned by an individual in the United States. Ann's family lived in a house built in 1863 that is now a national heritage site. Following her graduation from Freeport High School, she attended Westminster College of New Wilmington, VA for two years and was a member of the Theta Epsilon Sorority. In 1962 she served as a director of an Army Service Club in Murnau, Germany. Following her time in Germany she obtained a rank of Second Lieutenant in the United States Army at Brooke Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She attended the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary, completing a degree in occupational therapy. She then worked at Fitzsimmons Army Hospital in Denver, CO where she met Dr. Wayne Mall. They were married on October 10, 1964 and served in the army hospital in Tokyo where she taught occupational therapy. Subsequently Wayne and Ann lived in Estes Park, CO where Wayne joined his father in medical practice for three years, after which they moved to Fremont, CA where they lived thereafter. Ann found great joy in gardening, cooking, hiking, bicycling, and entertaining friends. She excelled at tennis, snow skiing, waterskiing, and horseback riding, was active in several bridge groups and was a vibrant and active woman all the days of her life. She and her husband traveled extensively and enjoyed visiting all 50 state capitals, mostly in their motor home. They also traveled around the world three times, spending months at a time in exotic locations off the beaten path. They have been to every continent together except Antarctica. Ann volunteered for the Washington Hospital Service League and Meals on Wheels. Her last days were kept comfortable by the highly skilled staff of Pathways Hospice.
