Maurice Sockolov Obituary

Maurice Lee Sockolov 1926-2010 Resident of Yountville Maurice Lee Sockolov, also known as "Socko", passed away on October 9, 2010, in Yountville, CA. Born in San Francisco, in 1926, to Russian immigrant parents, he was a San Francisco boy. As a child, he always had a tennis racket in his hand. He started to play tennis on the public courts of San Francisco, before it was an elite sport. He won several National Championships, including USTA Boys' National Hard Court and USPTA Men's 55 Singles. Maurice attended Lowell High school, served in the Coast Guard in WW2 and then attended UC Berkeley, where he earned his "Big C". His hangout was the Cal Club in SF, and when he moved to the East Bay, it was Davie Stadium. Maurice was the Pro at several Bay Area Tennis Clubs, and taught private lessons. He established the Chabot Canyon Racquet Club in the 1970's. He authored the book "Forty Love." In between, he opened several Women's clothing boutiques. Maurice was of the beatnik generation; he went to Calistoga for the mud baths before it was en vogue, had a motorbike, built an 'A' frame house in Bolinas, and listened to Alan Watts. Maurice lived in Piedmont for over 25 years, before moving to Yountville, where he had lived for the past 23 years. He recently moved to the Veteran's Home, after his beloved wife of 54 years, Barbara, died five years ago. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Daryl Rush; granddaughters, Allegra and Brittany Rush (who fondly called him "Poppy"), brother Robert Sockolov, and brother-in-law, Donald Schwartz. Maurice will be honored at the Veterans Home Remem-brance Service, Thursday, Nov. 4 at 10 AM. He will be interred at the Veterans Home Cemetery. The family will be holding a private gathering on Saturday, November 27, from 2-4, at the home of his daughter.
