Esther Reid Johnson

Esther Reid Johnson Resident of San Leandro June 25, 1914 - Oct. 26, 2010 Esther Johnson passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, October 26 after a lengthy illness. Esther was born on June 25, 1914 in West Greenwich, Rhode Island and moved with her mother and brother to Oregon. She graduated as valedictorian of her class from Astoria High School and attended Oregon College of Education. Esther was very active in Girl Scouts and the First Baptist Church of Astoria. She moved to San Leandro, California with her husband Russell in the early 1940s and worked for many years for P.G.& E. Esther was an active member of Bancroft Avenue Baptist Church in San Leandro (now San Leandro Community Church) where she taught Sunday School and organized the library for many years. There was not a member of her church that didn't receive one of her beautiful, hand-made quilts. She was truly an artist. Esther also enjoyed traveling, bird watching, and cooking. She had an ongoing love of children and generously gave to many charities throughout her life. Esther was predeceased by an infant son, David, brother Phil and half-brother Norval and is survived by her half-sister Faye Lindberg of Seattle, Washington and cousin Virginia Stevens of Sun City, Arizona. Gravesite service will be held at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Boulevard, Hayward on Friday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 pm. 510-471-3363. Memorial service will be held at San Leandro Community Church, 1395 Bancroft Ave., San Leandro, on Sunday, Oct. 31 at 9:30 am. Prayers and remembrances will be shared at 9:30 am and the worship service will begin at 10:00 am. 510-483-1811.
