Robert HAYES Obituary

Robert L. Hayes Oct. 17, 1934 ~ Nov. 3, 2010 Resident of Oakland Robert L. Hayes, known as Bob to family, friends, and fellow colleagues passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at his home following a lengthy illness. He fought his multiple ongoing medical battles with courage, pride, and tenacity. He never gave up in his fight to live a quality filled life. Bob was born in San Jose to Robert L. and Judy Mattos Hayes, both deceased. He attended San Jose State and Heald's Engineering College in San Francisco. Bob spent most of his career as a successful business owner in Lafayette for the past 30 years, and had worked for Pacific Gas and Electric Company 15 years. Bob enjoyed, actually he loved, his work in the pipe line industry and was recognized by colleagues as a national expert. For decades he was part of a prestigious committee who wrote pipe coating specifications. He put forth much effort and functioned as a strong team player with all around him. You could always count on him and his expertise. All who respected him, including his business associates, will sorely miss him. He was proud of his accomplishments but at the same time, he was humble. A private person, with a heart of gold, and demanding, yet giving, describe him. With his gregariousness and sense of humor, he attracted others. He worked hard at all things and expected the same of his associates. He commanded a fierce loyalty from all he worked with. He was generous with all, and contributed to causes of all descriptions; he seldom said "no" to those individuals or causes in need. He is survived by his wife Sally J. Baker; his son Peter L. Hayes (wife Darlene) and granddaughter Brianna of San Leandro; as well as his brother Wally Hayes of Oakdale; and several nieces and nephews. Bob's other son, Steven, predeceased him. Those of us who knew him, so appreciated him and his value to all of us. He will be missed greatly by all who loved him. A celebration of his life and his many contributions and successes will be held from 2-4pm Friday, November 19 at Crow Canyon Country Club, 711 Silver Lake Drive, Danville, CA. Donations in his name may be made to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and your local Hospice. He is in a safe resting place now, free of illness and pain. May he rest in peace.
