Hi, this is Jack. I have one memory where I had bought a small Sail Boat. I came up with idea to go down to San Luis Reservoir. The Boat came with two sets of sails. One of them was a Mylar Racing Sail. I decided to use the Racing Sails. We drove down to the reservoir that took just under 2 hours to get there. When we arrived the Wind was blowing really hard. I was sure this was just about perfect. We bought got into the boat and I set the Sails. That wind grabbed us and shot us clear across that very large reservoir in just a few minutes. We were moving very fast. When it came time to tack I yelled to Earl to switch sides. I jumped over and set the sails. Earl did not move quickly enough. That wind just caught us and flipped the Boat over upside down. Here we were in a very remote place and upside down in that reservoir. Earl started yelling that he was drowning and needed help. I saw that he was very close to the boat and I had him grab onto the boat. We both had life jackets on. He continued to stress he was drowning and I said, Earl! Grab the boat you are fine. He did and started calming down. Meanwhile, surprisingly there was another boater on that Lake. They were in a power boat. I was able to flip the Sail boat back up right but it was full of water. I dropped the sails and they were able to tow us back to the Dock. 2 hour Drive, One incredible sailing experience, then a Dump. Priceless. Earl talked about that day for years to come. Another Interesting fact, Earl was laid to rest at San Joaquín Valley National Cemetery, in the Shadow of this very large remote lake.
Earl you were one of the good guys, I miss you.
Love, Jack
