In my my first year as a "new kid" in the OFD, I was lucky to be permanently assigned to the Truck crew Steve was a member of. What a mentor! Steve had this uncanny ability to find the hot spots, both while chasing the fire and during overhaul. He would visually scan the roof, and like a dog sniffing out gophers, he would sink his axe in his chosen spot, and sure enough there would be flame coming out the hole he created. In addition to his firefighter skills, he was just a great human being. Always warm, always interesting, and always fun to be around, with the absolute best "one liners" I have ever heard. He could have you in laughing stitches in a minute.
Rest in Peace my friend. I am so glad, and lucky, that our life paths crossed.
