Hollis Taylor Carr Resident of Berkeley Beloved husband to Frances I. (Madison) Carr (deceased), devoted brother to Harold Carr (deceased) Doris Waddell Carr, brother-in-law to Lucille Carr, father to Hollis T. Carr, II and Allen G. Carr, father-in-law to Velda A. Carr and Kristen A. Jensen, uncle to Capt. Cynthia Harris and Harold Carr, Jr., beloved companion of Sandra Poindexter, grandfather to Hollis Taylor Carr, III, Antonia Frances Carr, Ian Jensen Carr, Ella Patricia Carr and Zoe Frances Carr, great grandfather to Aaron J. Powell and Melina Taylor Taplin. Hollis passed away surrounded by loved ones on November 2, 2010 after a brief but mighty battle with metastatic lung cancer. Born in Washington, D.C. on August 4, 1926, the second of three children of Giles Edward and India Taylor Carr. Hollis grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, graduating from Montclair High School in 1944. He joined the Navy at the age of 17, and served proudly in World War II and the Korean War. Hollis was a United States postal carrier for 51 years, and walked the same postal route in Kensington for approximately 36 years. He served on Berkeley's Waterfront Advisory Board at various times from 1975 through 1994, was a member of the Democratic Party, the NAACP, the board of the African American History Museum in Oakland, California, and supported many social causes. He was a small craft pilot, and a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Academy of Model Aeronautics. A longtime member of the New Orleans Jazz Club of Northern California, the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society, and a supporter of the jazz programs of the Berkeley Unified Schools and the Four Seasons Concert Series, he loved music in all its forms and was a passionate supporter of jazz preservation and education in the Bay Area and beyond. He proudly marched as the Grand Marshall of the Piedmont, California 4th of July Parade with the Zenith Jazz Band for many years. A celebration of his life will be held at 5:00 on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Northbrae Community Church, 941 The Alameda, Berkeley, California.
