Jean DeJong Obituary

(Ada) Jean DeJong A life-long resident of Albany, CA Jean DeJong passed away January 7, 2011 in Berkeley at age 84. Contracting polio in 1950, she fought the increased ravages of the disease in recent years with the unwaivering support of her dear husband Ray of 63 years. She was born in Oakland Dec. 8, 1926. One week out of the hospital, her parents Hugh and Shirley MacKellar brought Jean home to Albany where she lived her entire life on the same street in both her family and married homes. She attended SF City College and taught school prior to contracting polio. In later years, she owned and operated Granny's Attic antique shop in Albany for 25 years. Jean was active in school and political affairs in Albany and elsewhere. She was a member of many clubs including Soroptomist, Doll Collectors, and Theta Chi college sorority. She loved gardening, shopping, and attending her husband's, children and grandchildrens' sports events. Jean also loved talking on the phone to stay connected to her long list of wonderful friends and family members, both locally and across the miles. Jean is survived by her beloved husband Ray DeJong, loving children June and Jim DeJong, daughter in law Jane Gerughty and dear grandchildren Jeff and Janelle DeJong. Cherished wife, mom, grandma and friend you will be deeply missed. Services will be held Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Sunset View Mortuary Chapel, El Cerrito, CA. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to: Post-Polio Health International, 4207 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108-2930.

Ray thank you for making sure I knew about Jean's passing. Unfortunately I didn't get the message until last night.
Over the years getting to know Jean has been so special to me.Knowing I would see you both every week was something I would look forward to.
Ray I'm sure you'll agree when I say one couldn't help but fall in love with your sweet wife. Never did Jean pass an opportunity to think about me, to indulge me, or to make me feel special. My heart is broken.
I'm so sorry for your loss Ray. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
