Bob Jeter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 20, 2008.
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Former Green Bay Packers cornerback Bob Jeter, the father of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball coach Rob Jeter, has died.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee spokesman Kevin O'Connor said Rob Jeter learned of the death Thursday afternoon and went to join family members in Chicago, where his father lived. He said Rob Jeter told him by phone that his father was believed to have died of cardiac arrest.

O'Connor said Rob Jeter plans to rejoin his team in time for Saturday's game with crosstown rival Marquette.

Bob Jeter, who was 71, played on the Green Bay teams that won the NFL championship in 1965 and the first two Super Bowls. He played for the Packers from 1963-70 and was with the Chicago Bears from 1971-73. He was inducted in 1985 into the Packers Hall of Fame.

As a young boy in Weirton, W. Va, I always cheered for "cousin" BOB, and became a Green Bay Packer fan early. I had no idea he was as good as history portrays, because we loose touch with family when we sometimes move away. but I have tooted Bobs' horn from afar in Baltimore, as my cousin, the best Damn, FEARED, Geen Bay Packer of the day. I'm still proud to have known him.

Many years have passed since I last saw Bob, but we grew up together. We attended the same church, lived one street apart and attended the same school for awhile. I feel that I have lost a brother.

I would like to send my condolences to the Jeter family. As a boy we always imitated football players like Bob Jeter. To the Jeter family I wanted to say during death there is still a reason for hope. God promises at John 5:28 and 29 “the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” Instead of notices of death there will be notices of resurrections. We can all look forward to a time when all families and friends will be united and celebrate under perfect conditions.

I remember working out with Bob Jeter when I was in high school in Pittsburgh and he was with The Green Bay Packers. It was a truly an uplifting experence. Every time I had a chance to run with him or throw passes to him or play basketball with him, I took advantage of it. It made me feel so much better to be with Bob. He was an inspiration. This was a very, very, good man.

As a former football player and follower of great players I wanted to extend my condolences to the family of Bob Jeter. Even though I was a youngster at the time I remember Mr. Jeter as one of the cornerstones in the Green Bay Defense. Mr Jeter inspired me to play the corner in my football career also.
