Ronald Schmidt Obituary

NEWTON - Schmidt, Spc. Ronald A. "Ronnie", 18, Army National Guard specialist, died Sunday, August 3, 2008 while serving in Iraq. Visitation with the family, 6:00-8:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 12, Downing & Lahey Mortuary West in Wichita and 9:00-10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 13, Grace Community Church in Newton. Services, 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, August 13, Grace Community Church. The procession will leave the church at 12:00 P.M., en route to Greenwood Cemetery in Eureka. The procession should arrive at the cemetery at approximately 1:30 P.M. Ronnie was born in Newton and moved as a small child to Eureka. While growing up, he was always following close behind his grandfather, Fritz. The two were the best of friends. When he was 10 years old in the year 2000, he lost his grandfather. At the age of 12, he lost his father, Brian. That year he moved to Newton and attended Santa Fe Middle School and graduated in 2007 from Newton High School. Ronnie was a strong young man who loved a challenge and wanted to be the best at whatever he was competing in. He lettered in wrestling all four years of high school. He loved to go trail riding in the mountains of Colorado with his uncle, Paul, and loved to work on his car with his very good friend, Larry Nuehring. During his senior year, he joined the Army National Guard and became a "M" day soldier. After high school graduation, he went to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, followed immediately by AIT training in Fort Sill, OK. On the last day of his AIT training, he was informed that he would be attending readiness training at Fort Bliss, TX. The following January he was deployed to Iraq and was stationed at Camp Ashraf as a gunner in the alpha Humvee running routes for IED's. Ronnie was a brave, dedicated and determined soldier. This young hero was loved and will truly be missed. GOD BLESS OUR HERO. Preceded in death by father, Brian Schmidt; grandparents, Alfred "Fritz" Schmidt, Betty Schmidt, Beatrice Serrato, and Raymond Salas, Jr. Survivors: mother, Andrea Schmidt of Newton; aunt and uncles, Paul and Laura Schmidt of Goddard, Mark Schmidt of Hastings, MI; two half-brothers. Ronnie,
Not a day goes by that I don't think about you. I was lucky to have someone as special as you in my life. You were the joy in life. A happy soul in all that your short life endured. I am sure your friends didn't have a clue of what you had been though because you always had a happy attitude. You were a wonderful person to look up to. Thank you for all the hours of phone calls back home to me when you were deployed. I truely am thankful for them they are precious to me.
I miss you.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ronald, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Ronald A. Schmidt was truly a great person. He was a hero and he was a born leader. It's sad, because after he died, I finally realized the reality of life and I wish I could thank him, but I can't. The only thing I can do now is press onward and learn from the experience I had in Iraq with him and my unit. My condolences to his family and his friends. He was truly great person.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

You do not know us but we have had a son serving over in Iraq from September 2006 until August 2007 and then two weeks befpre he got home we got the news that his older brother got orders to go to Iraq. That son was in the same unit that Ronnie was in so they met in Newton then went to Salina then to Ft. Bliss, TX together. We have three sons that were in the National Guards at one time. I am so sorry you have to go through this pain of losing what kept your heart beating... your son. Although I never met Ronnie, I still wipe away the tears as I read about what a wonderful person he was..and also what a hero he was and still is for our country.
He is finally "home" with his best friend ( his grandpa) and also all the others who have left this earth plane to cross over to the place where there is nothing but happiness, laughter and love. Keep his memories close to you and know that..even though you can not see him or touch him right now.. all you have to do is "talk to him, or think about him " and he will be right beside you...surrounding you with his comfort and his love.
May God and his glorious Angels watch over you in this time of sadness.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Ronnie is truly a hero. God will keep each of you in his care. We do not know you personally. We are a part of the extended family of veterans that are saddened because of the personal loss and the loss of a great patriot.

To the Schmidt family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold Ronalds' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Dear Schmidt family
No words can express how you feel at this time. No thanks will be enough from a stranger; however, this stranger is expressing thanks and is extending a moment of silence in your sons honor. Peace be with you

Please accept my sincere sympathy on the loss of your son and our Country's Hero. I knew his grandparents and they lived on the farm where I first remember visiting my grandparents in 1947. God has called your son into his loving arms and I know you heart aches as do those who grieve at the loss of a hero at such a young young age. God Bless You and give you peace through these difficult days. I lived in Severy for many many years.

Dear Schmidt family,
I didn't know your son, but I wanted to express my gratitude for your son's bravery to allow my family to enjoy our freedom. He sounded like a young man who would not have done it any other way. You should be very proud. We are very sorry for your loss. You are in our prayers.

Dear Schmidt Family,
We want to express our deepest sympathy and to also Thank-you for having a son like Ron, because if it wasn't for men like him, we wouldn't have the freedom you and I enjoy today.-You don't know us, but our son is in Iraq right now. He is older than your son but he was a wrestler like your son, when he was younger. He was an Acedemic All-American wrestler in the NAIA. He still enjoyed wrestling with his men when he was in Iraq on the tour he had before this one. There is something special about those wrestler's. God Bless You All and Thank-you again for your son. Our heart goes out to you all.
