Hello to my Uncle Edward and Aunt Beverly.
I'm so proud of all of the people of Greensburg for rebuilding as fast as you have. I still remember that day because I was up at OSU visiting Heather and had come back to the motel and turned on the TV and the reader at the bottom said town total destroyed by tornado and it said Greensburg. I did'nt have their phone number but my brother got a hold of my husband and I called home. I just can't believe everything is gone. I'd been there a couple of times and remember the BIG WELL - still have the bumper sticker for that too. So if anyone in Greensburg knows ED and Bev Dauber tell them their niece in Oregon says hi since they don't have email. thank you

Since the show started you all have inspired me to go into the feild of enviornmental science,so that I may be able to follow in the foot steps of the people of Greensburg. Good luck to all of you and I hope your dreems of a new way of life inspire more people,in all place,to go green. You are in our hearts and thoughts. God bless you all and the town of Greensburg.

To the people of Greensburg. I read all the wonderful things about your town. It sounds like a great place to call home.

I was in church (Houston , TX), shortly after it happened, when I saw the first picture. I started weeping with tears rolling down my face. I could not imagine an entire town devistated like that.

I wanted to volunteer my time but I lived to far away to just help during the day. Eventhough I was unemployed I counted myself lucky.

My heart still goes out to your town. I hope things are much better. I know it will take along time to rebuild. You still have all those wonderul people in your town that everyone seems to love. Maybe one day I can visit.

In March of 08 My family and I came upon Greensburg on our way to Colorado from Marion, Arkansas to see my son in the Army. Sorry to say we had forgot about the tornado that struck Greensburg, as for us being so far away. We were changed by the damage and resilance of the people their. We watch Greensburg on the discovery channel and our daughter wants to be a leed builder architect. Greensburg has inspired our 12 old daughter and we are sorry for its losses. She is now a fan on Greensburg's facebook.

I live in Chapman, KS we had a F3 tornado go threw our town on June 11th. I feel very thankful that we have a very tight community and are recovering from this tragic event. I really just wanted to say that I thought that it was wonderful that 2 days after our tornado there were volunteers from all over the state including Greensburg. To me that is amazing and it shows what wonderful people come from that town. To travel so far to help a town that has just experienced the same thing those people have been living is indescribable. So thank you to all the volunteers! God Bless!

My family and I visited my home town of Pratt last week. We drove through Greensburg at night, but we took a special trip back to Greensburg during the day a few days later. I want to see for myself what it was like now. It's still amazing - in many ways. Amazing to still see the damage that is so obvious but amazing also to see the regrowth and the drive to rebuilt. It happen to be my birthday and my phone rang my sister sang out her rejoices and I had to explain that I was in Greensburg and there were much more important things going on and my heart was here in Greensburg! I left some tears and a piece of my heart in Greensburg last week. My son remembers just a few years ago being at the bottom of the well when the "scary" warning sirens (just the monthly ones) went off and he FLEW up those stairs never had heard anything like that in his whole Arizona native life! But that will be something that sticks with him for his entire life. We never lived in Greensburg. But even out here in Arizona we did some fundraising for a few families - we didn't raise a lot, but we did what we could! Greensburg- we are praying for you - and you keep doing what you are doing! You are making a lot of progress! We love you all!!!

I took the liberty of visiting this web site today and the aerial photos of the devastation in Greensburg,KS do not give an adequate impression of what I witnessed when I drove by 2 weeks after the tornado stole this township's life and lives. At the time, I was instantly awash in tears after passing by. What shook me even harder was the tenacious activity of these fine folks making attempts to put back normalacy. Mid-western people are still among the most tenacious, hardest working kind you will find anywhere. People helping their neighbors like family. Tragedy was not needed to bring this group of people together because they appeared to already be a tight net community. Keep the faith and may God continue to bless you all in Greensburg!

I haven't been "home" to Greensburg since the tornado. My last visit was so memorable. My children got to have their usual soda at Hunter Drug. There was a visit to the library. We attended the Friday night basketball game. We saw friends.

I will miss the old Greensburg, but look forward to what it can and will be!

Returning from a recent road trip to Colorado, my daughter and I felt drawn to take Highway 400 through Greensburg. We were truly humbled by what we saw, but also encouraged. If the progress of the trees in the area in any way reflects the determination of the people, Greensburg will indeed come back. All of the sad, misshapen trees, which had been stripped of all but their main trunk and a few ragged branches by the unforgiving tornado, were showing off a new layer of bright green leaves. It was almost as if Mother Nature was saying, "forgive me."

I live in Oklahoma and I travel through Greensburg to go visit my family in Hays. The devestation was overwhelming.
The police officers directing traffic, the trucks hauling the debris from town to the new site. The look of the town from a distance. My heart goes out to all of you. I hope recovery goes swift and well.

I had been driving through Greensburg weeks before the tornado and when the road was reopened, I went though that following Wednesday. The devastation was overwhelming.
I have continued to drive through about every week to go to Pratt and I see the town slowly starting to recover and move forward. I can see that the spirit was not taken from this town.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Iwas born in Wichita, and grew up knowing about Greensberg, and then i married and we moved to the Texas panhandle, even then Greensberg was on our route between Pampa and Wichita, so At least once a year we would travel through to Wichita. before we moved further south in Texas several times we would stop at the Big Well site and our children would be able to see this site. Back a few months we traveled from south of Houston along the coast through Cameron la. Holly Beach and Grand Chenier and they too know what the storms can do to towns, more people ought to take time and visit these places...back in the late 50's I and my three children stayed a week with my parents in Wichita about 58' 59' and tornado warnings were sounded every nite for a week....a little town south of Wichita was wiped out, all that was left was a garage apartment...people state why do we live down here on the gulf coast where the hurricanes come in.........I tell them at least we have warnings and can prepare to evacuate. We left for Rita, but it hit the state line at Lousiana and Texas. I still watch the tornado storms path. and pray that they just hit wide open spaces. Take Care and God Bless you all.

My heart goes out to all my friends in Greensburg. You are a strong willed town and I know that your strength will rebuild an even stronger town. I use to follow my brother up and down the streets on my yellow bike as he delivered the news paper. What a great town to have grown up in. I am sad to see our my childhood town torn apart. But I believe in the towns people and know that they are strong and I look forward to seeing the new Greensburg develop on the horizon. My office has had several fundrasers here in Kansas City and even though I can't be there to help with the physical labor, I am here helping in other ways.

We are survivors of the Greensburg tornado. My husband and I are unable to have kids so we had dogs. All of our dogs rode out the storm and we was able to get all of them, finding our last one on may 30th. If I can give advise to anyone it is to NEVER take anything for granted because the first time you do it will be gone. May God Bless all of you that have helped and put us in your prayers.

Having lived in Grand Island Nebraska in 1980 after a storm like this I know what kind of games the weather is going to play with your mind for a long time coming. Just know that it will get better with time. It's going to take a long, long time but it will get better. It will never completely go away but it will get better. Thank God for the lives that were saved and pray for the ones lost. I hope that your town will come back stronger than ever. Keep your chin up and come back strong.

My sympathies and prayers go out to the great Kansas community of Greensburg.

I used to live 16 miles south of town in the late 40's and 50's. I was fortunate to have started my education at Greensburg. In fact one of my classmates was Mayor Lonnie McCollum. I have many fond memories of Greensburg and have combed the devastating photos to find landmarks I once knew.

May your faith in God and the cares and concerns of others help guide you onward.

This week ,I was honored to assist in the clean-up in Greesburg. Loading truck after truck, we made thousand of trips to the land fill.Personal items were many, and the anguish and dismay showed in all the workers faces.Little was said,we were there to do a job.
Reading this guest book in private, all those feelings surfaced just from handeling all your lives . God Bless you Greesburg.

I first arrived in Greensburg as a FEMA security officer on May 5, and spent 2 of the last 3 weeks there. I have never felt more a pure spirit and love from people who have lost everything. While walking the town, people that had nothing left was trying to give food and something to drink to my officers while they were standing in front of an address that the house did not exist. No attitudes of what they were owed or what was entitled to, just pure love and determination to rebuild and gratifullness. I would be proud to be able to call myself a citizen of Greensburg, KS.

Today I was allowed to travel on Hwy 54 thru Greensburg. The shock has not yet warn off. I can not find words to express what I was allowed to see first hand. The devastation and destruction caused by this mammoth tornado on May 4th is not only undescribable, but uncomprehendable, especially for those not allowed into the city to see it for themselves, but only get to look at pictures. By being able to see for myself the tons and tons of debris and the hundreds of people working to clear it all, it is obvious why traffic cannot be allowed to travel through. Although, I do wish people could see what damage a tornado of this magnitude is capable of and maybe everyone would pay attention to the weather warnings. My prayers are with all of Greensburg and may you come back stronger and better than ever. God Bless You All.

My wife and I both had relatives that live in Greensburg. My grandmother was in Pratt with my Aunt and Uncle at Wal-Mart. My Grandfather and my Uncle Mark were at home when the tornado hit the town. All I can say is that someone was watching over them. I have been to the house and I have seen first hand the damage that was caused. I am still amazed that they are with use today. My wife has a grandmother that also lives there. She wasn't in town at the time but she did lose her home and all of her possessions. She also has a cousin that lives there. They were at the Kwik Mart when the strom hit. Someone inside that store was smart and told them to get inside the freezer. So all in all everyone that we know made it through the storm in one piece. They may have lost there homes, but they didn't lose there life.

I saw pictures of the damage while I was on my way to Greensburg after the storm hit Friday night. The drama and tragedy of it all really can't be seen in a picture. It has to be felt. I am a 30 year old father of 3. I also am a volunteer firefighter for Gray County Kansas. I was apart of one of the Search and Rescue teams that was sent there. I still can't and wont be able to ever comprehend the amount of damage that was present in Greensburg. The first words that came out of my mouth when we hit the city limits was, "Where did the town go? Is there anything left?" Then the next thing that ran through my brain was I have to find my grandparents house. But how was I going to do that. I never knew the address. I always found it by land marks. The biggest land mark that I used was the Hand Dug Well. That was no longer visitable. All in all I did find the house, and they had gotten everyone out and on there way to either a hospital or a shelter. So my family was ok. My wifes family had already been moved to her aunts house north of Haviland.

The point of this is to say that even through all of the adversity that the people of Greensburg has endured, They still find a way to see the good in it all. I admire the residents of Greensburg Kansas, and my thoughts and prayers go out to every man, women and child that was there thought that frighting experience. I look up to you and I will help rebuild when I can.

You can take there homes. You can take there cars. You can even take 95% of there town. But you can't take there spirit, There willingness to survive. To help others when they themselves only have the shirt on there backs. The people of that small community are people to look up too, and aspire to be like. If you want to know the definition of a real life HERO, then look no farther the a citizen of Greensburg Kansas.

I am also from Greensburg, and see many names in the guestbook whom I remember. Seeing the pictures of buildings I remember, so completely destroyed has been giving me nightmares for the past 2 weeks. My sister and I both live in Wichita now, but when we went "home" to help our dad salvage what he could, the sight was unreal. I didn't even recognize the "Wright" house on the corner of Kansas and Bay streets, even though I spent a lot of time there with my sister, playing with Tanya and Karen (Janet and Barbera were a few years older than the 4 of us). Even though the Wright family moved away several years ago, it was always still the "Wright" house to me.

My parents lost their house a year ago to a fire, and the Greensburg residents were very kind to them helping them replace what possesions they could, and when my mother passed away in January, many people I remembered from my youth were there helping dad. And now in the space of a year, my father has lost 2 homes, and my mother. He's not sure if he's going to return to Greensburg or not yet. Thank-you to all of those who have given their support and prayers. [email protected]

On a cross-country trip Sept. 2005, I stopped to spend the night at the J-Hawk Best Western. I walked some of Greensburg's streets that evening and sent my nephew a card from the Greensburg post office the next morning. I found it to be a beautiful town with pleasant people. It is a national loss. I’m glad to see that the President of the United States was there to show that all Americans lost something to that tornado when it struck Greensburg. My condolences for those who lost loved ones and my sympathies for those who lost their homes.

May the good Lord bless every one of you. You have a huge loss on your hands, but I know you have the strength and fortitude needed to rebuild. And you WILL rebuild. I was involved in emergency services for Xenia, Ohio, when it was hit by a tornado in 1974. The city was devastated; but it came back, as your town will. Take care.

Behind every tragedy is a stronger pillar. The residents of Greensburg (all friends and family) will rebuild and create pillars of steel within themselves. My great aunt and uncle (Nell and Bus Johnston) lived in Greensburg. As a child, I spent many summer vacations at their home on Walnut Street. The closeness of this beautiful, small-town community left its stamp on my heart. Hang onto each other and grow. I can’t wait to watch. God bless.

I was stunned to see the devastation wreaked by the tornado that wiped away most of Greensburg. You're in my thoughts and prayers. I am so sorry for your loss and pray you recover. You have handled this tragedy with dignity and spirit that we can all learn from. God bless you.

Looking at all this I'm reminded what Jesus Christ says that he'll never give us more than we can bear, I'm praying for this town and it's people but I'm having a little trouble with that statement. God Bless You All.

Many memories visiting Greensburg growing up. My Aunt Doris Muntz and Aunt Dot Tuttle both still lived there. I enjoyed many summers at the pool with my cousin Ronald Tuttle. I will always have great memories. I pray that Through God your community now can rebuild. My father who is now 84 cried as he watched the news. He grew up in Haviland and Greensburg. We will continue to pray for all of you.

I watched for the last two days as people in Denver loaded a truck to help you and your families re-build...it helped me believe again after a long dry spell in people and community and love in our fellow man...the grace is the people you and your loved ones have inspired to give. Their memories will live on in the charity and hearts they have softened against a harsh world. Be proud of their inspiration and your fortitude...we will visit and meet the "steel" of Greensburg. God Bless You.

There are people from the west coast to the east coast praying for you. Although it has been nearly 2 weeks since the devastating tornado hit Greensburg, I have been struggling to intellectually and emotionally assimilate what happened. Having lived 17 years (1957-1974) of my life in Greensburg, the impact of what has happened to that little town can’t help but have an impact on those of us that called it “our hometown”. I now work for the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF), and I was traveling in Portland, Oregon, for LAF several weeks ago when the tornado struck Greensburg. I remember the shock and horror I felt the morning of May 5th sitting in my hotel room when I saw the initial television reports about the Greensburg tornado being broadcast on CNN. It truly seemed surreal!!

Like many others, I have vivid memories of many of the people and local places that have been impacted by this terrible storm. Even after many years having been gone from Greensburg (my last visit there was in 1984), I am so thankful for the people in Greensburg that had a really positive impact on my life during my formative years. My experiences growing-up in Greensburg definitely set the stage for the paths that I have chosen to take as an adult.

My mother, Arlene Gebhardt, died 5 years ago. She helped many Greensburg residents in her role as Kiowa County Welfare Director during the years we lived there. Mom always remembered Greensburg fondly, and I know that she would be heartbroken to see the devastation. Even during the times when my own nostalgia about Greensburg might wane, Mom would simply remind me of things about Greensburg that were so special.

It is hard to be resilient in times of tragedy. However, with faith and perseverance, lives can be rebuilt. In the end, we all have our memories to hold on to. Keeping the people of Greensburg (past, present and future) in my thoughts and prayers…
