Jerry Smith Obituary

Jerry Dean Smith, 44, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away Saturday, October 27, 2007. Funeral service will be 12 p.m. Saturday, November 3, 2007 at the Advantage Chapel, 6606 Independence Ave., with burial in White Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday at the Advantage Chapel. Memorial contributions can be made to the family. Jerry was employed by the Hyatt Regency Hotel as a banquet and catering server for 9 years. He was a member of NEAA, recently celebrating his 10th year of sobriety. He was dedicated to helping anyone who needed his help, just as he was doing at the time of his death. He loved people and animals. The newspaper said he was "a Good Samaritan." That he was! Always there to listen, lend a hand and be a friend. He loved his children more than anything. The rest of his family, friends and extended AA family ran a tight second. Jerry will be missed by many, but never forgotten. The Lord has called on his helping hands and heart. What an asset he will be. We can only hope that we impact and touch as many lives as he did. The family would like to thank everyone for all the support and shared stories we have received. Jerry was preceded in death by his Father, Jerome Smith, Grandparents, Ann and Joe White, Grandfather, Lowell (Dean) Reynolds, Uncles Ernie Reynolds and James Smith. Jerry is survived by his children Candace and James Smith and their Mother, Cindy (Bruce) Wagers; Mother, Sharon (Fred) Carroll; Grandmother, Joyce Reynolds; Siblings, Lea Ann (Vince) Benedetto, Danny (Donna) Smith and Bryan Carroll, Nephews and Nieces. Vincent and Felicia Benedetto, Amber, Levi and Chance Smith, Aunt Melody Reynolds, Uncle Roger Reynolds, cousin Matthew Reynolds, Aunt Shirley (Walter) Ball and Aunt Jerretta (Jerry) Naylor, his dog Gracie and cats Ursula and Chainsaw, his AA family and numerous other cousins, family and friends. Thank You, Jerry Smith

For loving me
For touching my life
For making me a better woman

I believed you when you told me you loved me- it help me to learn to love myself. I believed you when you told me I could have a relationship with my children again. Watching you with yours helped me know you. I believed you when you said being honest was important. You made me want to try everyday. I believed you when you said I never had to feel the way I did before the pain and confusion led me away from the One who created me. I believed you because you always saw the bigger picture and I know you still do.

I love you. Teri

Jerry was a very good friend of mine, always thinking of how he could help someone else. He has helped me more than I ever let him know. He loved my children and grandchildren like his own. Dakota will always remember the flashlight guy. I will miss him very much.

My heart goes out to Jerry's family...I am truly sorry for your loss. I have some really good memories of Jerry, I remember one of the first times I met him I was at Northeast AA with Shorty, and Jerry walked in in all his cowboy gear and had duct taped a pen light flashlight to his glasses and said it was so he could see in a basement he was working on and wouldn't have to try to hold the flashlight...we got a good laugh out of that one! Let me tell you the dances will not be quite right without Jerry...he had his own special dance that will be truly missed!

From "The Book Of Friendship":

Time has come and gone. Lots of water has flowed but I still remember you. Still hear your voice in my mind in times of trouble. You cannot be here now as you have gone off on new adventures, new journeys, but I still remember you as if you were here yesterday. Such is our friendship that death itself has not broken our bond, not even rippled our love. I am here and you are not, but it is as if we are still friends, still together. I am still remembering and I believe you to be so as well.

To Jerrys family and kids,
We have gotten to know Jerry through his family and kids, since we live next door to his sister Lea Ann. He was a kind hearted person that loved his kids and pets. We will miss visiting with him when he came up to see his sister. So sorry for your loss and we will miss him.

Love,
Julie & Charlie

Man, you touched my life frequently through sharing your experience strength and hope with me in the oddest of places where we would seemingly coincidentally encounter one another. You have fought the good fight; through surrendering, you have won. Having watched you take your personal heart aches and give them meaning through using those very things to reach out to others with hope that they too can have meaningful transformation in their lives, you certainly showed me a clear message- you 'walked your talk'. Thanks Jerry for all you did and for all that you have been. I will hug my boys neck a little tighter at night and not take life for granted. Vaya con Dios.

We are going to miss Jerry so much! I remember him down at the A.A. Hall, wearing his famous cowboy hat and his pair of cowboy boots with just one spur! He was very caring and genuine and had a love for life.

I've known Jerry since high school and also from NEAA. I can attest to Jerry's giving nature. I loved him like a brother and was heart broken to hear about his death. I feel blessed to have known him. He always made me laugh and I have many memories that will help me through the grieving process.

Jerry was one of the kindest and nicest person I have ever known. My first thoughts were how ironic that he died while helping someone, because that is how he lived his life. He will truly be missed. Josh and Justin Dillard's mom, Sheila
