Daurine Irvin Obituary
IRVIN , Daurine Andrews
(1924-2006) Daurine Andrews Irvin, a resident of Carlsbad, California, passed away December 24, 2006 at Scripps Encinitas Hospital after a short illness. Daurine was a third generation Californian, born on April 24, 1924 in Bell, California to Harold and Hazel Andrews. She graduated from Bell High School, where she majored in journalism and served on the staff of the school paper. Later, while working on Broadway, she attended Columbia University to complete her education.
Her lifelong passion was focused upon the musical stage and dance world. As a child, she joined the Meglin Kiddies. Her dance career commenced at the Paramount Theater, Los Angeles as a member of the dance ensemble in George White's "Scandals". When that show moved to New York, Daurine started her career on Broadway as a dancer and a model. She was a featured dancer at Billy Rose's "Diamond Horseshoe", and later appeared in shows at Lou Walter's "Latin Quarter". On stage, she toured the country with the show "Follow the Girls" featuring Gertrude Niesen. Later, she led the dance troupe in the production, "Sweet Bye & Bye". During this time, Daurine also worked in experimental NBC television. Finally, in 1946 she left Broadway for Hollywood, where as a member of the Screen Actors Guild and the Screen Extras Guild she worked in several movies including "The Robe". She also danced with the Terry True Dancers at the former Golden Hotel in Reno in the early 1950's.
She married her husband of 52 years, William B. Irvin, on August 7, 1953 in Santa Barbara and, with the birth of their first child in 1955, ended her professional career. However, in 1961, Daurine became a member of the Footlighters, a longtime Los Angeles charitable group supporting needy children that raised its charitable funds by producing annual cabaret balls featuring singers, dancers and performers who were members of the group. Daurine appeared as a dancer and performer in more than 30 shows, was the Production Chairman in 1965, and became President of the Footlighters in 1983-1984. During those years, the Footlighters supported their Child Guidance Clinic at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, and later, the Child Life Center at Harbor-UCLA Hospital, among other charities. In 1970, Daurine was Publicity Chairman for the Freedom's Foundation, later became President of Master Calendar, and served a term upon the Board of Directors of the Professional Dancers Society.
She is survived by her husband, Bill, and their three children, Geoffrey, 51, of Thousand Oaks, Califor nia, Lisa Michelle, 47, of London, England, Tami Lynne Bollay, 45, of Santa Barbara, California, and four grandchildren, Andrea and Gregory Irvin, and Madison and Ryan Bollay.
A Memorial Service was held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 20, 2007 at El Camino Memorial, Encinitas Chapel, 340 Melrose Ave., Encinitas, California.
