Turner Cook Obituary

Turner "Hot Dog Man" Cook March 10, 1924- April 3, 2008 COLUMBUS, GA— Turner "Hot Dog Man" Cook, 84, of Columbus died April 3, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008 at McMullen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronald Earles and the Rev. John Knighton officiating. Burial will follow at Parkhill Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Sonny Hall, James Cook, Kenneth Cook, Mike Merritt, Ronnie Earles and Gary O'Neal. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd., Columbus, GA. Mr. Cook was born March 10, 1924 in Barbour County, AL., the son of the late Bessie M. Johnson Cook and Henry T. Cook. Mr. Cook retired from Fleming Foods in June of 1985 at the age of 62. Two weeks later, he joined his son to become the first hot dog vendor in Columbus, GA. The Hot Dog Man's New York style cart could be seen each day, rain or shine, on Broadway between 11th and 12th Streets. Having a love for people, this was the perfect "job" for him. His homemade chili made by his wife, Sis was a staple with the downtown crowd. At the age of 83, he was working part time with his son Roy at Cook's Place until cancer got its grip on him. He fought a long hard battle but eventually gave in to God's calling to "come home". He would share his faith with anyone that would listen and even those that wouldn't. He was saved at the age of 12 and steadfastly held on to his Christianity until he took his last breath. Columbus has lost not only a gentleman, but also a gentle man. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Virginia Driggers Cook of Columbus; a daughter, Martha C. Earles and husband Ronald of Troy, AL.; son, Roy Cook and wife Teresa of Columbus; grandchildren, Ronnie Earles and wife Tamara of Auburn, AL. and Tracy Britt of Ladonia, AL.; three great grandchildren, Callie, Camilla and Emma Claire Earles, all of Auburn, AL. To the Cook Family,
My Sympathies are with you for the loss of "Uncle" Turner, but you are blessed he's with God. I haven't seen any of ya'll in over 40 years, but I remember going to "Uncle" Wavy's store. Mother and Daddy are with God, too. I remember they always made us call everyone Aunt and Uncle. I don't remember much about Grady, but my husband remembers all of you. I do remember playing with ya'll, and I remember your family singing. My sister, Pat sent me the obituary. My husband was reading it out loud, when he came to Roy's name, I told him we used to call him Sunshine and he always wore a baseball cap. I see he still has that nickname. It is so nice to know that your whole famiy is still in God's family. May God bless you
and your memories lift you up in this
time of sorrow.

Another saint gone to be with God.. What a blessing for Uncle Turner and what a loss for us left here. If you knew Uncle Turner, then you had to know Jesus to. Because if you didn't it wouldn't take him long to introduce you if given the chance. He did love to hear the group sing and they loved to sing for him. I always remember how excited he would get when he and aunt Sis would be singing and testified how wonderful it was going to be one day to see Jesus to face. I know without a doubt he enter in the gates shoutin' & praisin'......
We love you Aunt Sis

It seems like a dream, that we have lost a very special person in our lives. But oh man, what it must be like in Heaven! Uncle Turner was a true man of God without a doubt. I idealize his life commitments. The smallest things he considered a blessing. He never took anything for granted, always grateful. He and Aunt Sis was our inspiration and support throughout our singing ministry. If you ever got a chance to experience his distinct hooping and hollering during a service, you knew Uncle Turner was there , serving God and receiving his blessing (esp. when Dan sang Dead Man Walking) He taught me alot through his teachings and preachings, to live life the fullest through God's eyes as if there were no tomorrow, always be ready, strive daily. You will truly be missed. Special thanks to those who wrote, called , prayed or brought food. Our family has truly been blessed by people like you and Uncle Turner is smiling up in heaven in aha of you all.

Sunshine, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. Having lost my Mom not too very long ago, I know how hard it is to always remain grateful that we have shared life with our loved ones for as long as we were allowed. I know God's healing arms will surround you all with His love. Blessings from a fellow Baker Lion, '65

Roy, it has been awhile since I have seen your father, but he was a really great guy. I loved when he had the hot dog cart out in front of CB&T downtown and when you used to deliver hot fresh cookies to the businesses. I missed that when it stopped. I am so sorry for your loss. May the family be Blessed and strengthen for Mr. Cook is resting in the arms of Christ our Lord and redeemer. I enjoyed Mr. Cook and eating hot dogs on Broadway, especially during the 80's when I had to ride the bus and waiting for transfers to the mall and to work. He was always so nice and pleasure to greet.

He has runned his race and finished is course. There's a blessing on the other side of through. And he has made it to the other side of through.
Look unto the hills from which comes your help, your help comes from the Lord.

We were so sorry to read of Mr. Cook's passing. Mrs. Cook you know that we loved you both. You all were some of the very first friends we made when we moved to Columbus in 1970. You supported us faithfully in our singing ministry. You will always have a special place in our hearts. We are praying for you during these most difficult days ahead. Sure you will have a very hard time adjusting, but with your strong faith, the support of your family, and the prayers of others, you will make it. We love you and we're praying for you.

My heartfelt sympathies to the Cook family. My memories of Mr. Cook were over 14 years ago when I was pregnant and craving a footlong. I would eat one of his dogs atleast once a week.
