I still carry the funeral card Joanne gave me 22 years ago. Every year Chief Barbara gets younger. They say as long as one person speaks the name of one who has passed on, they live. Certainly Gerard Barbara lives in my heart. Rest in peace, Chief.

I worked with Chief Barbara when he was a Lieutenant in Ladder 102 = "Bedford Avenue Express".
I will always remember the incredible ultra fast pace we would turn out of quarters responding to a box.
I remember his knowledge of tactics / procedures and his cool demeaner while fighting fires. I will always hold his memory in highest regard.

21 years later, and we still remember Gerard as a hero. Never forgotten. Rest in Peace.

Over the last 15 years I have seen the happy smiling face of Cheif Barbara in many places. I have seen it at the site, the family room, the FDNY poster, the 9/11 memorial and museum.
This past week I saw it again on the back cover of the FDNY Columbia Association Journal.
I am annoyed at myself for missing an opportunity to speak with the family at the dinner.
Another fine family like my own, it takes a tragedy to become aware of.

As Patriot Day rolls around we think of you and the many others lost on that horrible day, but we honor your memory and service to this great country. Many of us will pause to pray for your wife and family, your many friends, and all of those co-workers who respected you so much. You are a true example of a hero. Much love from Texas
I took the photo at the memorial and wondered who it was. A great man.

I ran four miles for you today Chief. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I have always looked up to your larger than life legacy. Every time I pass your statue near Clove Lakes Park, or whenever I drive past your street sign, I am inspired. Inspired to fulfill my dream of getting on "the job" and continuing the works and deeds of men such as yourself. Your sacrifice has inspired, and it will never be forgotten!

Mr. Barbara, Although I have only been in the fire service for 1 year, I was assigned you for the 2012 9/11 memorial stair climb, not knowing much about you at the time, other than what the tag I was given to carry that just said "Assistant Chief Gerard A. Barbara Command WTC" and had your picture on it, I carried you all of the 110 stories making sure I hit each step. Once I finished my 5th round (22 stories 5 times), I looked at the tag before I was going to ring the bell and announce I got you to the top and was finished, I decided that I would go back down to the bottom floor to help motivate and encourage the other firefighters that had more to go as tired as and wanting a break I was realizing that you would have done the same thing for your brothers. Once I got home, I started doing research on you to figure out more on who I was carrying so it wasn't just a tag of a fallen firefighter I knew nothing about. You were already a motivation for my climb realizing what you did, but now you're a motivation for my career and made a positive impact on my life. It was an honor to climb to the top with you Sir. Thank you.

To The Family,
9/11 is a day that all of us will always remember. Mr. Gerard Barbara and all other firefighters fill the meaning of the word "heroes" simply because they are willing to risk their lives to save others. May God provide the comfort that you need and bless all of you.
Sincerely,
Mr. Terry of NC

As the 8th aniversary approaches, I find my thoughts turn to you and your family, sir. You never met me; I was a Red Cross volunteer at Service Center 6 on Staten Island. I met your wonderful wife, Joanne and sat with her on the steps of the chapel at the retreat house where I was stationed.
We spoke about several things: how I had been chosen to work with the firefighters' families because I had been a firefighter, how much she loved you and how much your children loved you.
She gave me a laminated funeral card that day. I have carried it with me every day of my life since.
No, I never met you, sir. But we are bound together - thru the brotherhood of firefighting, thru our country and our state. So maybe I amy be forgiven if my heart grieves over you and my fellow brother firefighters in a special way.
May the Good Lord bless and keep your family especially close this Friday, September 11th.

Jerry,
Today is a good day to say hello. It's Sunday September the 9th. It's a nice sunny afternoon and Ginger and I, as we did 6 years ago today, are waiting for our "usual suspects" to arrive for dinner. What makes this such a good day to say hello, is that 6 years ago on this day, a sunny Sunday September the 9th, 2001, I had the pleasure to talk to you, unfortunately, for the last time. But that said, today, a nice sunny Sunday September the 9th, I remember you and our last conversation, with a smile on my face. Say Hi to Mark.

Hey Uncle Jerry,
I miss you more than words could say... I never thought of looking for a website to leave messages for you to read from heaven until the other day when my friend Lauren (whose friendship I owe to you and her brother F.F. Lenny Ragaglia of E. 54 L. 4) made me read several messages she received on a memorial page for Lenny. I can't believe its over 5 years and although we weren't extremely close I am glad I have several memories close to heart of such a HERO. Each time we watch my sweet 16 video we all get tears in our eyes why did you have to be taken from us? you were such a happy go lucky, unselfish person, always smiling, At my party you sang into the camera "peaches and cream you come on like a dream..." My grandparents get so happy that party is on video and we can replay your voice over and over. My sweet 16 would have been the last family event for you to attend prior to 9/11 had Joseph and Lisa not got married, if only anyone knew at their wedding it would be the last time they saw you I don't think ANYONE would of let you go. I have to thank you for the impact you have had on my life Uncle J and everyone else's life as well, you have inspired my brother to follow in your footsteps and if he does we'll know it was because of you. You're wife is the STRONGEST woman in the world and I can only hope to be half as strong as her, please continue to give her all the strength you do because you are her angel that gives her that extra push. Uncle Jerry I miss and love you and whoever said it gets easier as time goes by lied because somedays are just extremely difficult to get through. I LOVE YOU see you when I get there.

It is very touching to read all of the wonderful things that people have posted about my Cousin Jerry. But the truth is, words can not describe what an amazing person Jerry was. You had to live it, and thank God I was born into such a close family and had all those years with Jerry in my life. What I would give for another Sunday morning softball game. I can't believe it's been five years already. I think about and miss my cousin everyday. The world is lucky to be left with the legacy of such a great man, I'm luckier to be left with all of these memories.

Dear Mr. Barbara,
I listened to your story this morning as I walked my dogs on this, the third anniversary. Your wife shared with radio listeners on NPR her life with you, her love for you and her grief over the loss of her best friend and husband of 30 years. She brought to us one of the most compelling stories I have ever heard. You must be as proud of her as she is of you, although I am not sure that is possible. She said that together you enjoyed for 30 years what most people don't have for 30 minutes. That is one heck of a legacy. The blessing that God gave us in you continues to live in her.
Thank you, sir.

Hello cousin Jerry,
I am writing this note to you as I watch the third anniversary ceremonies of the 9/11 attacks. I think about you and the events of that day, every day. Your picture hangs on my cubicle wall at work and it reminds me of your heroism and what you and so many others sacrificed that day to save the lives of others.
I am the youngest of all the first cousins in our family. My memories of you are few and far between, but I do have many wonderful memories of those family barbeques at your mom & dad’s (Aunt Margie & Uncle Matt) house in Lake Carmel. I was the little kid who always wanted to be around the big kids. And, from time to time you and the rest of the older cousins would let me hang around.
I attended your memorial service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and was overwhelmed with deep sadness for your family and all those who knew and loved you. I gained a new appreciation that day for you and all men and women that put their lives on the line to serve and protect.
Rest in peace Jerry and may God Bless you and your family.

I never met you in life, but I attended your memorial service at

Happy Birthday Jerry!
9-11. It feels like forever ago. It feels like yesterday. Memories. Thank God we have memories. We went to the same high school. We both worked for the TA. We were both electricians. We worked in the same firehouse for a while, and our paths would continue to cross for the next 25 years, right up to the morning of 9-11 when you as a City Wide Tour Commander, FDNY, responded to the WTC and tried to save my son Mark, giving your own life. I'll never forget the last time I spoke to you. It was always good to hear your voice, it would bring a smile to my face. And it still does when I think of you. It was Sunday night, September 9, 2001, about 7:00 p.m. You had called to tell me that you and Joanne had decided to go on the trip to Italy that the Fire Chiefs Association had put together for about 20 couples, and that Ginger and I should go also. We'd have a lot of fun, you said. We would have, we always did when we were together with the girls. I'll never forget that night for another reason. That was the last time I saw or spoke to my son Mark. Mark and his wife Nicole were over for dinner that evening, together with other family members. Memories, till we meet again. Say "Hi" to Mark for me.
Your friend,

I really miss you, not that I talked to you every day or even once a month but I knew you were here and there and now I know you're not. You know I talk about you just about every day, because as before I am so proud of you and all that you have accomplished, not just the FDNY accomplishments but the family you and Josie created and nurtured and grew. I love you and I miss you and I don't really know why but, today I felt compelled to let you know this way.......keep watching over us..until we meet again...Patti

Joanne, Paul & Caren, I have read what others have written here and it seems I am not the only one who wears a Mercy Band with Jerry's name on it. I've worn it every day since I got it in January. Every morning when I put it on I pray for Jerry, and for each of you. I lived in NYC for 39 years before moving to NJ years ago. In my heart I will always be a New Yorker. Many years ago I worked on Broadway & Vesey and watched them build the Trade Center. It was heartbreaking when my husband & I went to Ground Zero in March, it truly is Holy Ground. Hi cousin Gerry, it's Teresa just checking in. I just wanted to tell you how much I miss and how much dad, mom, and Samantha miss you. You were born a leader and died a hero. You gave up your wonderful life to save others. Those few words describes you right there! We have all wept and have all been deep in thought and in disamazement of this tragedy and I'm still waiting for someone to pinch me so I can wake up. You should be very proud of Caren and Paul foor how well they have been handling the situation. I know you would be proud of Paul for being Robert's Confirmation Sponser. I have so much to right, but I know I can't remember all I want to write, so I thought that I would just summerize it in these few, but meaningful words: I LOVE YOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER!!!!!!!!! I know you are enjoying heaven and i know that you and all of the other heros are highly respected up their and here on earth. Have fun and I will make sure to keep in touch through prayer. We thank Gerard with all our hearts for devoting his life to saving people and fighting fires. Such a deep devotion to others can only come from a heart full of compassion, warmth, caring and love for mankind. May Gerard's humanitarian spirit, his courage, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May warm memories of moments shared with Gerard lighten the sorrow in your hearts. May you always feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts. We are deeply sorry for our nation's great loss of Gerard. Our hearts cry with you in America's loss of a hero.

We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dearest family and friends of Gerard Barbara,
You may be familiar with the organization Mercy B.A.N.D. The group has created bracelets in which bear the names of every victim of September 11th. Only one is made per fatality. I have recently been blessed with receiving the name Asst. Deputy Chief Gerard Barbara on my bracelet. Through reading the touching article about his dedication to his important role at work and his family, I feel my life has been deeply impacted. At the young age of 16, I know that wearing my bracelet will impact others, too.
You are in my prayers, always and forever.
