A Working Mother
Valaria Murray, a legal secretary, was a mother, a professional and a woman who knew how to enjoy herself. She gave hours and hours to the PTA at the school her five children attended in Flushing, Queens. She clicked off to work in Manhattan each morning, resplendent in high heels. She kept a book of crossword puzzles in her purse for those empty moments on the subway, where she sat busily filling in the answers with a pen. She was always up for a game of bingo, and loved Clint Eastwood movies like "In the Line of Fire."
She had always worked, first part time and then full time after her husband died. When she was 63, she polished her computer skills with a city-sponsored course for the elderly, and when she was 64, she landed a job with Ohrenstein & Brown on the 85th floor of 1 World Trade Center. Her children, all grown up, watched for her e-mail messages.
For her 65th birthday on Sept. 15, 2000, they secretly planned a brunch at a restaurant in Bayside, Queens. They and the grandchildren and many of Mrs. Murray's friends surprised her as she arrived. She burst into tears.
"Ma, we believe in you," Ken Murray declared at her memorial service. "We love you. We honor you. We miss you."

September 11, 2013 I was very dear friends with Vals son Kenny Murray in Los Angeles. I remember the first time I met Val picking her up at the airport with Kenny, after a short ride home and dinner I realized she was one of those ladies everyone wanted as a mom. So many laughs during our visits. I will cherish them forever. It was sometime after that horrific morning that I found out that Val was one of the victims. For me it now made that day very personal. I still become emotional this day...

To the Murray family,
I cannot say enough how much I miss your mom. She was my mothers best friend (Dolores from Monroe NY) for the better part of 40 years. Val seemed to come to all the big moments in our lives. When Val and Valery came to my wedding in CA (1991)for the weekend or my brothers wedding it showed how much she loved us.
She always said to get a job with benefits and to enjoy life, and be happy. That is hard to do when the people you love are not around....

I had the pleasure of knowing Valerie and working with her at a firm in 1999. She was a wonderful person. Full of life and always had a smile on her face and that is how I remember her and always will. You and your family will always be in my prayers.

I worked with Val's son Ken and heard stories about her and the rest of the family. I was horrified to hear she was a 9/11 victim. As we come up on the tenth anniversary of this terrible tragedy, I will be thinking of Val and everyone who loved her; keeping them close in my heart. I have lost touch with Ken and would appreciate it if someone would contact me with information on him. I can be reached on Facebook.

Valerie and I started working at O&B on the same day. I worked in the Garden City office and had the pleasure of working with her a few days a week while she took a break from the NYC office. She was an absolute doll. She always had a smile on her face and used to "live it up a bit" when we ordered some baskin Robbins ice cream as a well deserved break. I try to watch the memorial every year and listen for her name. My thoughts and prayers are with your entire family.
