The Rev. Dr. Jerry Laymon Falwell
The Rev. Dr. Jerry Laymon Falwell, 73, of Lynchburg, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 15, 2007. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 49 years, Macel Pate Falwell.
Born in Lynchburg, Aug. 11, 1933, he was a son of the late Carey Hezekiah and Helen Beasley Falwell.
Dr. Falwell established Thomas Road Baptist Church in 1956, where he pastored for more than 50 years. He founded Liberty University in 1971, and oversaw its rise to prominence as the largest evangelical university in America.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lewis T. Falwell; and two sisters, Virginia Falwell Jennings and Rosha Geraldine Falwell.
Though Dr. Falwell will be remembered for Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University, he always said his greatest accomplishment was his family. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Jerry Falwell Jr. and his wife, Becki of Goode, and Jonathan Falwell and his wife, Shari of Forest; one daughter, Jeannie Falwell Savas of Richmond; one brother, Gene R. Falwell of Lynchburg; and he was known as "Poppy" to his eight grandchildren, Jerry "Trey" Falwell III, Charles Wesley Falwell, Jonathan Falwell Jr., Paul Savas Jr., Jessica Falwell, Natalie Falwell, Nicholas Falwell and Caroline Falwell.
Funeral services and a celebration of Dr. Falwell's life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at Thomas Road Baptist Church. LU's Vines Center and Williams Football Stadium will be used to accommodate overflow for the service. Burial will be private.
Dr. Falwell will lie in repose in the grand lobby of the Arthur S. DeMoss Learning Center for public viewing from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
Dr. Falwell will be moved to the worship center of Thomas Road Baptist Church for another public viewing from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday.
Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider the Founders Scholarship Fund, c/o Liberty University, 1971 University Blvd., Lynchburg, VA 24502. Dr. Falwell was very generous to all people but truly loved helping students who had financial challenges with their tuition costs. Thus, the family wishes this scholarship fund to be a lasting legacy of his love for young people.

and confused, he helped me. i sure would like to know whatevev happened to that house?

Jerry Falwell was one of the very best Christian people I have ever had the priviledge of knowing and working with. He was an inspiration, total man of God, and excellent leader. He spoke the truth when the truth didn't want to be heard.

Dr. Falwell went out of his way to assist me in establishing and operating my Alabama based prison ministry and I shall always be grateful for his professional and prayerful support.

Dr. Falwell practiced what he preached and never...

As LU Alum who lived on campus the day of his passing... We miss Dr. Falwell. The school and TRBC are in good hands but the atmosphere is not the same after his untimely passing. My favorite memory is the first convo of each year when Dr. Falwell would addressed the student body for the first time. I can still hear those "JERRY" chants. See you when we get to heaven Dr. Falwell.
