Valhalla Commuter Train Crash Victims

Obituary

VALHALLA, N.Y. (AP) — Investigators are looking at such potential factors as highway traffic and rail signals as they seek to understand a fiery commuter train wreck in suburban New York.

Six people were killed Tuesday evening in the collision between the train and an SUV that was stopped on the tracks.

Robert Sumwalt, vice chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said Wednesday that investigators have downloaded some data from the Metro-North train's black box-style recorders. But he said they need to verify speed and other data before releasing it.

A witness says the SUV driver stopped to examine her car after the crossing gates came down around it, but then she moved forward as the train approached.

Sumwalt says: "The big question everyone wants to know is: Why was this vehicle in the crossing?"
