My mother shared many fond memories of Ruby when the two of them skated together in the late 1940s and early 1950s on the Dayton Blueballers roller derby team. Ruby was the Dayton team's "enforcer," which meant paying back skaters on the other team who roughed up her teammates. Ruby was known for delivering a sharp elbow to offending opponents, often knocking them over the ropes and out of the rink. Although tough and fiercely competitive in the rink, outside Ruby was sweet and kind and always willing to extend a helping hand to her teammates and their families. My mom loved having a couple of after-derby beers with Ruby and was amazed by Ruby's ability to chew tobacco and drink beer at the same time. Hopefully, my mom and ruby are skating together once again in Heaven.
