William CARTER Obituary

CARTER, William W. "Bill"

WILLIAM "BILL" W. CARTER, 80, of Springfield passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at home. He was born on

August 10, 1940, in Mansfield, Ohio, the son of the late

Walter and Florence Carter. Bill was very active with 4-H in Clark and Champaign County. He worked with the youth at The Ohio State University as an Olympic Coach. Bill was a member of Explorer Post 6 and

Masonic Anthony Lodge No. 455. As a young man, he worked for several years for International Harvester, in Springfield. Starting on the production line, he worked his way into

management, filling positions of greater authority and

responsibility. General Dynamics Land Systems recruited him in the early 80's to help manage the production of the U.S.

Army's brand new M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank. He retired from General Dynamics in 1993 and returned to International Harvester, now called Navistar, where he worked until he

retired in 2000. Survivors include his beloved wife, Harriet L. (Everhart) Carter; one daughter and two grandsons. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

We are so very saddened to hear of Bill's passing. Bill was that special kind of person that is very rare to find. He loved life and he loved his family. We've known Bill and his family for more years than I can count. He will be missed so very much by our family and our condolences go out to his wife Harriet, his daughter Cheryl and the other family members who will miss him as much as we will. May God comfort and Bless you all at this very difficult time in your life.

Bill will be greatly missed by the adults he worked with and the youth he coached.

Bill was a strong supporter of youth programs and was a 4H shooting sports instructor for Clark and Champaign Counties for 19 years. He volunteered many hours teaching and used his expertise to judge 4H projects for several county fairs. He started a program to introduce disabled students at Wright State University to the sport he enjoyed. As the head coach of the Springfield Sharpshooters Rifle Team, Bill coached many individual students who competed in the US Junior Olympics and and who later received scholarships to shoot on varsity rifle and pistol teams throughout the country. He was a good friend and great coach and he will be missed.

So sad to hear of Coach Carter's passing and we extend our deepest sympathies to Harriet, his daughter and family. I met Bill about 15 years ago when he agreed to become our daughter Kendal's rifle coach. His generosity, patience, personal time and mentorship given toward our daughter over the years has been a positive influence and is greatly appreciated. Bill was a good friend to me and he was one of the most interesting persons I have ever had the pleasure to meet. He was wise, witty and bold and I always enjoyed hearing of his life experiences. I will cherish his memory and miss him deeply. Dennis & Korin Elder.
