William PATTERSON Obituary

PATTERSON,

William Franklin

March 27, 1926 to March 3, 2021

Bill Patterson who led a rich and full life has answered his last roll call. He lived a life of art, which defined his 95 years and his perspective of wisdom, laughter and the love of his family who treasures the legacy he gave us. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Jane Patterson, in 2016.

His life of being aware and involved in the community of Dayton, in Ohio, as an Army veteran and a citizen of the

United States and the earth, along with his life of art made our lives and anyone who knew him rich and full.

The last 4 years fed his internal fires with a smoldering disgust against the idiocy and meanness and that kept Dad alive. Now that wisdom and calmness has prevailed along with

democracy, Bill Patterson is leaving the rest to us.

Dad loved to read famous quotes, and said that wiser soul's words are always better. Well he was pretty wise. Dad told us often, "don't sweat the small stuff . . . the sun will still come up every day and if it doesn't we've got bigger problems".

Graduate of the Dayton Art Institute, U.S. Army veteran of World War II, President of Dayton Art Center, President of Dayton Advertising Club, Dayton Advertising Club Lifetime Achievement Medal, Elected member of the Dayton Board of Education, Chairman of the Dayton Museum of Natural History Board, Chairman of the Friends of the Museum,

In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Dad's passion for the arts and art education, please make a donation to the Seedling Foundation which supports Stivers School for the Arts.

Thinking of Pat and how he worked to make a better world.

He exemplified that
"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion . . . " - Nelson Mandela
Pat represented one of the best of humanity.

Thinking of my friends, Pat and his wife, Jane, the love of his life.

Last year, he ended his story of 95 years and began a new chapter in my life.

Pat dreamed, thought about, planned and lived life to its fullest - as a man on a mission - to give life his all - for family friends, community, country and the world.

He liked reading famous quotes.
His passing reminds me of a quote from another man on a mission: "Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace." - Nelson Mandela.

Pat and Mandela, each left us at age 95.
Each knew how to live and gave life what they understood that life required of them.

There is much to write about memories of Pat and Jane´s life and our friendship in this new chapter.

A year later Bill still crosses my mind. I came across photos from the early 80s and still missing him.

I remember William F. Patterson.
Pat was my friend, brother at heart, and devoted to his family - quietly proud and fiercely protective. He was dedicated to improving the Dayton community and assumed leadership in the city´s civic and artistic life with cheerfulness, dry humor and sharp wit. I met Pat and his beloved Jane in 1962, through the Dayton Urban League. Over the years, we shared a close friendship and kept a lively dialogue - through visits, letters, telephone calls and emails - until her passing in 2016. Pat and I continued the dialogue - he talked of missing Jane, about his sons´ and grandchildren´s progress, the joys of receiving a daily call from a granddaughter, anticipating and becoming a great-grandfather. Otherwise, he talked about leaving his Harvard Boulevard home, post-retirement drawings and exhibits, and the state of our nation. It was a privilege to know Pat, who could start a conversation with a rusty nail; and tell a joke that you´d remember and keep you laughing for days. Among those whom I hold in highest esteem, he towered as wise, most respectful, trustworthy, loyal and generous.

Mr. and Mrs. Patterson were residents of mine at Parklayne. I loved both of them very much. Mr. Patterson would show me different pictures he had taken of humming birds on his patio and would share his drawings with me. I always loved it when he drew pictures of residents at our parties. I am so sad to hear of his passing. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.

I remember your lovely family from days at Salem Lutheran church (now New Hope Lutheran where I still belong.) My parents were Christian and Janet Pabst. I remember commitment to the church, the community and neighborhood and artistic talent including photography. I was always active with my kids in DPS and remember all the commitment there too. Sending condolences and also rejoicing that you were lucky to have your dad for so many years. Blessings to your family.

BILL WAS A GOOD FRIEND, CUSTOMER, AND MUCH BELOVED FATHER TO YOU BOYS AND THE ARTS. I ADMIRED HIM FROM AFAR. MAY HE REST IN PEACE. MANY WARM REGARDS, BROOKS

So sad to now know Bill was living right here at Bethany Village and I never knew it. I remember Bill well and admired him as a DPS bd. member and advocate for Stivers School for the Arts. Had I known he was here, I would have thanked for his wisdom as a bd. member and support for DPS, as I was a teacher in DPS.
