John HERY Obituary

HERY, John Joseph

80, of Arcanum peacefully passed away March 15, 2021, at Hospice of Miami County with family by his side. John was born April 21, 1940, to the late George and Mildred (McCowen) Hery in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Phillipsburg in 1958 and had a successful automotive garage at his residence for many years. He loved horses and dogs. He was a flat track motorcycle racer in his younger days and traveled all over the country on his Goldwing. He restored many 2-cylinder John Deere tractors and loved going to tractor shows. He was also passionate about flying his Luscombe airplane after he became a private pilot in 1968 and would usually fly to lunch with friends every Saturday when possible. He belonged to the secret society for pilots, Quiet Birdmen (QB), which requires at least 500 hours of being pilot-in-command and invited in by a member. He is survived by his son Mark (Lisa), grandchildren Travis (Chloe) Hery and Danielle (Kurt) Grove and 6 month old great-grandson Declan Hery, brother George and sister Joy (Terry) Hoffman, numerous nieces and nephews and longtime friend Carla Yoder. John donated his body to the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University. There will be no services at this time but a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to Hospice of Miami County in John's name if desired.

My family moved down the street from John in 97,the first winter we met John. It had snowed and he would always plow out driveways in the area with his antique John Deere 60 my family also collected antique tractors and I was only 8 and loved to turn wrenches and work on things. The first summer I spent almost everyday at John's garage watching him work on cars, tractors and all kinds of different things. I gained a nickname with him "hey john" is what he always called me, I would always ask questions "hey John whats this?" constantly and I am sure I annoyed him more than I ever knew but he would always answer them or show me how things worked. I credit John with getting me into my career field as a diesel mechanic and also showing me that the only good tractor is a green John Deere. He was a great friend and I will always think of him when I go to tractor shows. John will be missed and my deepest condolences to the family and to Carla prayers to you all.

John was an amazing neighbor and friend. When Rick and I moved across the street from him in the mid 90s he is what you call the true neighbor. Always coming to help us when Rick wrecked his truck (the week we moved into our house- he did not know us but helped anyway), and as they say it takes a village to raise a family. Our boys (Rich and Cole) loved to go across the street to talk to him bringing home a kitten or two. He never once was annoyed by them although I am sure at times they were...(smile). He loved his plan and motorcycles. He "showed" me how to negotiate the Ohio Motorcycle testing cones with his Goldwing on the road in front of our house with all the neighbors watching - and nailed it like a pro. So sorry for your families loss and hugs to all of you. He will be missed. Love the Salisbury Family (Rick, Beth, Rich and Cole).

I knew John for many years, and visited him often at his garage. He always had a cast of characters around, and was a character himself. He got me started in becoming a pilot, and I enjoyed several flying trips with him. I would meet him for lunch at times at his favorite place in Arcanum. I got to know him and his family over the years, and he was a good man, always with a strong sense of humor. I much admired him and will miss him greatly.
