As a freshman at Miami (graduated '75), I walked past the FA building every day to my Chemistry Classes and saw the students at the potters wheel through the basement windows. That same year I saw the students firing Raku on that walk and knew I had to get involved.
He had a practice of selecting a piece from the stronger students to remember them and had taken several of mine. I didn't feel it was my place to refuse when he took one I really liked. One Saturday I found some unfired bowls in the kiln room which had his distinct foot finish and decided to get back at him and glazed them and put them in the next firing.
I was using a lot of clay making a series of large vases. He usually criticized my glazing technique and offered to glaze the two largest vases if I let him keep one. Besides, I was using a lot of clay. I said sure as I was surprised he wanted to show me how to do two techniques better. I realized later he was also reciprocating my surreptitious action, except he told me what he was doing. Lesson learned.

What a wonderful and amazing man has been lost. He was so interesting to listen to about the many accomplishments and adventures in his life. Praying for his family.
