William SIEWE Obituary

SIEWE, William Edward "Bill"

Passed away peacefully at home on June 30, 2022. Born on August 31, 1959, to Mary Rita (Barnes) and Albert G. Siewe, Bill was the youngest of seven children. He attended Corpus Christi Elementary School and Archbishop Alter High School, where he played football. He went on to attend the University of Notre Dame, where he was part of the 1977 National Championship team. Bill was known as a kind-hearted brother, husband, and father, and was always keeping his friends and family laughing. He most enjoyed spending time with his family and golfing with friends at Walnut Grove. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Sheila; daughters Anne Marie and Sarah, son-in-law Ryan Wilkins; siblings Al, Mary Ann and Art Dudzinski, Jim and Cathy, Ruth Apolito, Steve, Dave and Ian; brothers and sisters-in-law Lisa and Phil McCorkle and Greg and Marybeth Bender; and many nieces, nephews and friends who will fondly treasure his memory. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM on Wednesday, July 6 at Emmanuel Catholic Church in Dayton. Friends may call at Routsong Funeral Home in Kettering from 4 to 7 PM on Tuesday, July 5. Bill was a great football teammate, both at Alter and at Notre Dame. At Notre Dame, Bill was a long-snapper for field goals, xtra points, and punts. He was outstanding in this role, and was always well-prepared to do his job. Among his many other highlights at ND, during the 1980 season Bill's perfect snap allowed kicker Harry Oliver to boot a 51-yard field goal--on the last play of the game--to beat Michigan 29-27. This is still one of Notre Dame's most legendary plays and wins, and Bill literally was in the middle of it all, performing his job flawlessly while under tremendous pressure. You can watch the play on You Tube by Googling "Notre Dame v. Michigan 1980 51-yard field goal." (The best version of the video is by Sports Odyssey, narrated by Regis Philbin.)

As a teammate, what I remember most about Bill was his preparation. Bill always arrived super-early for practice. He'd be dressed and ready to go before everyone else, and he would then greet his teammates and "hold court" from his locker as the other players arrived.

After our high school and college years, I always enjoyed running into Bill, whether at a golf outing somewhere or at Notre Dame. A quietly funny, smart guy, Bill cared deeply about his family and his former teammates. RIP Bill, and condolences to the entire Siewe family.
