To family and friends feeling the loss of Cuemyle, I am sorry that I cannot be there to share this day with you. Aunt Cuemyle had a life of great times, good times, and hard and bad times. Culminating a life that stood a very good test of time. The last of my aunts. A generational change of the elder. A bitter tea we all must drink. Yet strangely, I have laughed so hard this week. Memories. Tons of them! Only now can I see a central role Aunt Q was in making some of these memories into epic ones.
The first memory was asking me if I could write her name. "well sure!" I wrote the letter Q. " Thats not how you spell my name. guess it works though. Okay, you can spell it that way, but you have to spell AUNT in big letters first. Just with my name. Small letters when you write aunt Janice. Or any other aunt." She was smart, clever, and subtle. In the child's eye, AUNT Q was as big as life. She had "that" factor. Dressed in a denim jacket or dressed to the nines, she presented the room she was in. She did not go any where till she was ready.
When I was 13 yrs. old, Uncle Jim and Q took me to the Olympics in Canada. Very cool experience. We also were to stay a 4 days at a cabin, on a private lake, in Canada. The Caretaker, as it turned out, was a French - Canadian woman. I fell in love and over played my hand. Made a long but convincing argument on why we should just stay here forever. Jim excepted the 'fish and water story.' AUNT Q was a bit more inquisitive. Grilled me till I confessed: "I'm in love with the caretaker!" Next day, we'er leaving 2 1/2 days early. While waiting for Q to get ready, I asked Jim if two of them loved each other. He said "yes, with all my heart. She has me wrapped around her finger." Why do you two get mad at each other then? "I'm not really mad at her. I'm frustrated that she knows she will get her way. So, I just make a fuss and drag my feet. It is a matter of principle!" Some how that actually made since. Still does!
Close my eyes and I can see Jim and Q in an embrace that puts returning vets to shame. I can also see the fun and havoc of all four sisters reunited. Love to be a fly on the wall for that.
Painful as it is to loose who we care about and shared a part of our lives with, truly they are never gone. We will always carry them all with us.
