I met Jolayne and Sandy Bederman at professional geographers' meetings in
Kentucky in the mid-1980s and we continued to meet over the years....sometimes at geographers' conventions (I particularly remember going to dinner in Honolulu in 1999). But they visited me when I lived in
Salem, MA, and I visited them when they lived in Doraville.
After moving to Atlanta, we had lunch numerous times. We shared so many common interests. Jolayne had a complete set of Gourmet magazines and Sandy was equally committed to the BBC Music Magazine. Jolayne's herb
and spice collection was impressive; she carried her own little peppermill when eating out and on trips. They were well-read, well-traveled, and engaged with the world. I will miss them both.
