Evans, Sr., Everett Cornelius

Everett C. Evans, Sr., age 87, formerly of Piqua, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 25, 2024 in his residence. Everett was born in Rossville, Ohio on June 3, 1937, to the late Charles and Hazel (Walker) Evans. He married Kathrine I. Taylor on December 30, 1956 in Springfield, Ohio.

Everett is survived by his wife, Kathrine, of 67 years. He is also survived by four children: Everett Evans, Jr. (Sheila Taber), Urbana, Ohio; Jonathan (Samantha) Evans, Grand Prairie, Texas; Teresa Evans, Midlothian, Virginia; and Karen McWhite, Phenix City, Alabama; ten grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers James Evans, John Evans, and Franklin Evans and two sisters Esther Evans and Beverly Evans.

Everett was a graduate of the class of 1955 from Piqua High School and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from the University of Maryland in 1984. He was a member of The Iota Lambda Sigma Fraternity and a member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Springfield, Ohio.

Retired Veteran of the United States Army, with over 21 years of service, Chief Warrant Officer Four Everett Evans, Sr. began his career with the U.S. Army at the Army National Guard, Piqua, Ohio. He served one tour of duty in Korea, two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was appointed as a Warrant Officer in 1965 and assigned as an Armament Technician to Company C, 703rd Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division where he formed contact teams to support tank gunnery training in Grafenwohr, West Germany's largest NATO training site. In 1966, while assigned as a staff officer with Directorate of Maintenance, Headquarters, 1st Logistical Command, Saigon, he coordinated the logistical support for all of Vietnam's armament material. He next served three consecutive tours as a platoon leader and the Armament Repair Technician of a Provisional Maintenance Detachment where he improved operations so much that it was changed from a provisional detachment to the 261st Maintenance Detachment. As the "Officer in Charge," Delta Logistical Support Activity (Rear), he developed and implemented procedures for retrograde equipment to the U.S. As an instructor/writer at the Ordnance Center and School, he taught Ordnance doctrine to thousands of young officers who today make up the senior leadership of the Corps. He instructed the first Warrant Officer Entry Course and served as the primary staff officer responsible for the initial development of the Master Mechanic Program. He was instrumental in the Enlisted Personnel Management System revision of the 63-series Career Management Field. He retired from the military in 1977, and in 1980 was hired as a Training Specialist at the Ordnance Center and School. He increased the diagnostics training in all courses, coordinated the acquisition of Test and Measurement Diagnostic Equipment for the M1 Tank and the M2/3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, and increased the utilization of STE-ICE (electronic automotive diagnostics) in all applicable courses. He retired as Assistant Director of Training and Doctrine in 1992. Mr. Evans has served as Honorary Warrant Officer of the Ordnance Corps since 1988.

Everett was a devoted Man of God. A perfectionist in every aspect of his life. A very talented craftsman, especially woodworking. He loved motorcycling, going on cruises, and history. He especially loved to spend time with his family. He was a life-long learner, leader and mentor to many, and according to one – "A Walking Encyclopedia." He took life seriously, but a prankster at heart; an avid sports fan and season ticket holder of the Indianapolis Colts. No matter where Everett was, he never met a stranger.

Chief Warrant Officer Four (USA Retired) Everett C. Evans, Sr. was laid to rest August 7, 2024 at the Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 West Third Street, Dayton, Ohio.
