Herbert Mitchell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 2, 2006.
OBITUARY HERBERT E. MITCHELL B.Comm, C.A. (July 17, 1924- November 29, 2006) Herb passed away at home in Victoria B.C. with his loving family at his side. He was born in Iroquois Fall, Ontario, son of the late Frank and Edith Mitchell. Herb spent most of his youth and adulthood in Montreal, Quebec where he attended Lower Canada College and later McGill University. During the 2nd WW, he served as a Flying officer in the RCAF. In 1941, Herb married his childhood sweetheart Joan Little and together they raised their four children, Peggy, Judy (Ray Ego), Bill (Jenny Douglas) and Ken (Sharon-Lee). Shortly after retiring as Vice President of Finance for Hewitt Equipment in Montreal, Herb and Joan moved to Victoria in 1996. Here Herb became an active member of the Probus Club and the Victoria Lawn Bowling Club. While he quickly adopted Victoria as his home, he never forgot his Quebec roots. Every spring he and Joan drove across the country to spend their summers at his beloved cottage at Lake Memphremagog, where he and Joan could be found on the Newport Golf course several times a week. He was one of the three founding members of the Memphremagog Conservation Inc in 1967 which is still in existence today and continues to work for the betterment of Lake Memphremagog and its surroundings. Herb will be remembered for his sense of adventure, his love of travel, his sharp mind, and his strong belief in family values. He also leaves behind his three sisters, Barbara Denmark (Norm), Ruth Hamblett and Mary Bassett (Bob), his five grandchildren and his great- grandson. There will be a celebration of Herb's life at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6 at the First Memorial Funeral Services, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria and his ashes will be interred next spring in the McPherson Cemetery, Georgeville, Quebec. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation, 1510 Fort Street, Victoria, BC, V8S 5J2 will be greatly appreciated.
