Daniel Etzel Obituary

Daniel Leroy Etzel, 81, died peacefully on Monday, June 16, 2008, at Brewster Place in Topeka. The son of John and Catherine (Desch) Etzel, he was born April 20, 1927 in the Oakland neighborhood of Topeka. He graduated from Capital Catholic High School in 1945. He also attended Washburn University, Topeka, and Georgetown University, Washington, DC. He served in the US Marine Corps from June 1945 to August 1946. A loving husband, he married Rosemary Miller, who survives, on November 26, 1949, in Washington, DC. For over 40 years, Dan worked as a public servant. He worked for the Veterans Administration in Washington, DC and Topeka as well as the Topeka Air Force Supply Depot. For most of his career he was an auditor, working for the Bureau of Public Roads, or Federal Highway Administration, from 1960 to 1981, and the Kansas Department of Transportation from 1981 to 1992, when he retired. Dan was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Association of Government Auditors and the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by five children, Diane Etzel-Wise (Pat Wise), Lenexa, Cindy Swoboda (Tegan), Topeka, Dan Etzel (Sarah), Topeka, Linda Hoopes (Brad), Lawrence, and Lisa Hecker (Paul), Berryton. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; one grandson-in-law and one great-grandson; a brother, Richard Etzel, Washington, Utah; and a sister, Cecilia Philbrick, Palm Bay, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael; five sisters and three brothers: Sr. Rose Etzel, SCL, Mary Fagan, Katherine Burghart, Lavina Beier, Anne Etzel, Edward Etzel, Bernard Etzel, and Raymond Etzel. Dan enjoyed gardening, bargain hunting, political discussion, playing with his dogs, and tinkering with cars. Most especially, he devoted himself to caring for his family. Family will greet friends Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Rd, Topeka, KS 66614. A parish rosary will be prayed Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Dear Etzel Family - I knew "Mr. Etzel" almost as long as I knew my own Dad. He certainly loved his family, and I'm sure all of you and many other people have wonderful memories of Mr. Etzel. I think I'll eat a few Pillsbury cinnamon rolls in his honor.

Dear Rosemary and family,
I am grateful for the few short years that we have been neighbors with you and fortunate to get to know Dan and your family. What a super-nice man. I already miss our side of the yard chats and his smiles and friendly waves. He will be in our family's hearts forever.

Rosemary and Family

I was so sorry to hear Dan had passed away. I have fond memories of him back in the 50's when we carpooled to work at the Air Force Depot. He was a very kind and special person. My love and prayers to all of you.

Mr. Etzel...

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting you, I feel like I've known you for decades. Why? Because my dad always told me that you can easily tell what kind of parents one has through the child. He would tell me, if a son or daughter is good and honest, and is an upstanding citizen and member of society, then you can rest assured that the parents are too.

I've had the distinct pleasure of knowing your daughter, Lisa, for almost 20 years, and she and her family are wonderful to know. Lisa is such a lovely person that you must have been pretty special yourself.

May God be with Lisa and her family, as well as her mom and the rest of Dan's friends and relatives. May He bring each of you the peace you so richly deserve.

My deepest sympathy to the Etzel Family. I remember Mr. Etzel when I worked at Highland Park/UMB Bank and would always enjoy his visits to the bank. I would save the monthly NADA books for him to check values on vehicles and he would keep me posted on his children since I had worked with 4 of the 5 at the bank. May you heartache soon be replaced with special memories. Please know you and Mr. Etzel are in my thoughts and prayers.
