Maggie Blankenship Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 20 to May 27, 2009.
Maggie Elizabeth "Midge" Blankenship, 78, Middlesboro, Ky., passed on Tues., May 12, 2009 at the Hospice of the Bluegrass of Lexington. The daughter of John M. and Mary Belle Hankins, she was born in Richlands, Va., on May 24, 1980. She was preceded in death by her brother, William Hankins; sister, Jeanette Yeager; sons, Lon Madison and D.K. Jr.; daughter, Amy Elizabeth; and lifelong friend, Juanita Takacs. She will be remembered by her dedication to her God, her family, and countless friends scattered across the coal fields of "Apple-atcha." Her compassion for others despite her own trials remains an inspiration for all who knew her. Midge's storytelling, haunting alto voice, and sharp wit entertained, explained and eased the pain of those who suffered her great losses with her. She is survived by her husband of over 57 years, Donald "D.K." Blankenship, Senior, Middlesboro, Ky., who cared for her during her final years with the same love and devotion she had shown her children in earlier years as they battled cystic fibrosis. She is also survived by son Tom (Cheryl) and granddaughters Maggie Mae and Callie Elizabeth. Their home is filled with a love of music that "Mama Midge" surely fostered; dear friends Bill "Grumpy" Takacs and daughter Terri Ann Branson have been pillars of support for Midge through her toughest times, and caregiver Michelle Brock's tender mercies are greatly appreciated by the family. Midge suffered great losses in her life, but her strength, courage, grace and dignity were a testament to her faith and taught all of us that life is precious, love is powerful, and God is good. A reception of friends and family was Sat., May 16, at 10:00 a.m., followed immediately by a celebration of life ceremony at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Middlesboro. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Middlesboro or a favorite charity. Shumate Funeral Home was entrusted with all arrangements.
