Lillian Haskins Obituary

On Wednesday, November 18, 2009, God in His infinite wisdom reached out His hand and guided our beloved mother, the Reverend Lillian Pauline Haskins, to her eternal home. Pauline, as she was affectionately known, was born on January 18, 1924, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Henry and Lillian Poindexter. Pauline grew up in the Salem and Roanoke area, and was educated in the afore mentioned school systems; graduating from Lucy Addison High School in June 1942.
In later years, she relocated to Washington, D.C., where she met and married Lawrence Haskins Sr. The couple began their married life in White Plains, N.Y., and to this union there were seven children, Virginia Haskins, Lawrence Haskins Jr. (Skip), who both preceded her in death; Mornique Smith, Vanessa Haskins, of Roanoke, Va., David (Yvonne) Haskins, of Fayetteville, N.C., and the Reverend Henry (Linda) Haskins, and Fayleen Haskins, of Roanoke, Va.
Upon her return to Roanoke Va., Pauline entered the field of nursing after graduating from The Lucy Addison High School Burrell Memorial Hospital School of Practical Nursing. She worked in the nursing field for numerous years in addition to heeding the call of God into the ministry. She was ordained as a minister on June 11, 1982. Pauline was one of the first nurses for Total Action Against Poverty (TAP) and she retired from Blue Ridge Mental Health Services (Detoxification Center). She proudly served her community in this capacity and held pastoral positions at Memphis Church of God, Memphis, Tenn., and Goodview Church of God, Goodview, Va. Her love for community outreach afforded her the opportunity to mother and nurture other children as well as adults in the community, whose names are too numerous to mention. She worked tirelessly as a minister and a nurse until her illness. After she became ill, spending time with her family; especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her the greatest joy.
She leaves to cherish and rejoice in her memory, five devoted children; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one son-in-law, John H. Smith Jr.; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; her church family; and many, many friends.
Services are entrusted to The Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Monday, November 23, 2009, from 7 to 8 p.m. at The Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at The Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Rawleigh W. Quarles Sr. officiating and the Reverend Henry Haskins eulogist. Condolences may be sent to www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.

I have had the pleasure of delivering Meals on Wheels to Mrs. Haskins most every Wednesday morning for the past year and a half. I always looked forward to peaking into her cozy room and saying hello and seeing her sweet smile. I feel fortunate to have had her touch my life. My prayers are with her family and friends.

Vanessa,

It is a shame that long-time friends lose touch, as we have. How I enjoyed our years together at Minnick Education Center. I am so sorry to learn of your mother's passing. From the obituary and the comments of others who have signed the guest book, it seems that you and your mother had a lot in common. Although we haven't talked in quite some time, I think of you often, and you are mentioned often when I see former MEC/LCH staff--most recently Garry Lautenschlager. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Call me sometime: 540/562-0455.
Love & Blessings.

To The Haskins Family: Your Mother was a great lady that loved God, her family, and the Staunton Ave. Church of God church's family. My family and I will never forget the memorable time we shared at Staunton Ave. Church of God and outside of the church. I will miss your mother as will my mother, Ricky, and Vikki. We are praying for the family during your time of sorrow and grief. "Earth has no sorrow that Heaqven cannot cure." May these few words of encouragement be of comfort to the family members. Sister Haskins preached the word in season and out of season (2Tim.4:2), she has fought a good fight, she finished her course and kept the faith (2Tim.4:7) she is in heaven sitting at Jesus feet. I love you all and if there is anything me or my family can do, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Mornique,
I still just can't believe you have lost someone that we have spent so much time talking about. In our years of frienship, I have had the pleasure of knowing so many of your family, pastor, and friends. Your mother was so blessed in good company that last two weeks. I can testify that because of everyone I know through you, that surrounded her, in Pauline's last days. I am so sad for your loss but happy she has been rewarded for all the great things she did in this life.

Please let me know if there is anything that I can do...
until next week,

My love is with you, and family,
Renie.

REV. HENRY HASKINS AND FAMILY,
DEATH IS HARD TO ACCEPT WHETHER EXPECTED OR SUDDEN;LIFE AS WE KNOW IT CHANGES AND A LOVED ONE IS GONE. YOUR FAITH WILL SEE YOU THROUGH AS WILL PRAYERS OF FRIENDS YOU FAMILY. WE ARE HERE TO HELP IN ANY WAY WE CAN.
