BANDY, Va. — James W. Meadows, age 87, of Bandy, Va., died Friday, February 5, 2010 at the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va.He was born March 7, 1922 at Coldan, Va. and was a son of the late Robert E. and Ruth Mae Griffith Meadows. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, where he received many medals, awards, and commendations. On April 4, 1944, while serving in the European theater, he was wounded in battle, shot seven times by enemy fire. He was and is a hero. Upon returning home, he became a coal miner with Jewel Ridge Coal Company at Jewell Valley, Va., where he retired. He was a member of the UMWA Local #7327 in Jewell Valley, Va. and was a fifty year member of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge # 260 A.F. and A.M.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Strouth Meadows; one sister, Mary Pruitt; three brothers, Earmil T., Roy H. and Arnold B. Meadows.Survivors include one son, Bobby L. Meadows and wife, Ellen of Bandy, Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Emily Street and husband, Dillo of Pounding Mill, Va., and Mrs. Ruth Strouth of Richlands, Va.; three grandchildren, Tonia Jean Mitchell, Bobby Joe Meadows, and Christopher Dwayne Meadows; six great-grandchildren, Courtney Meadows, Kaleigh Meadows, Morgan Mitchell, Justin Mitchell, Ireland Meadows, and Braydon Mitchell; many other family members and friends.Funeral services for James W. Meadows will be conducted at 12:00 noon, Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands, Va. with the Reverend Rick Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow at the Meadow's Family Cemetery on Reynold's Ridge near Bandy, Va. Pallbearers will be James Altizer, Kenny Mitchell, Bobby Joe Meadows, Lloyd Dunford, Larry Meadows, Ira Strouth, and Gary Meadows. Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Griffith, Calvin Dunford, Christopher Meadows, Jim Richardson, and Junior Harrison.Military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post # 9640 in Richlands, Va.The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 6:00 p.m., Monday, February 8, 2010, where Masonic rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. by members of the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge # 260 A.F. and A.M. in Cedar Bluff, Va.Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va. is in charge of arrangements, and those wishing to send online condolences may do so at www.hurstscottfuneralhomes.com
