A bright light has blinked out-- that of Shanks. But, I know that although he is no longer a shining spot in this world, his example and teaching will go on through those whose lives he touched and through thosed he loved most- Adama, Shomari and Jamal. My thoughts and prayers are with you. And I'll miss him.

Darren and I would like to let the Shanks family know that we are praying for you during this ordeal. Atiba was such a wonderful force in our lives. I for one will always be grateful for the ways he endeavored to mentor my son. Throughout his life he always imparted wisdom with humor. We will never forget his impact and influence. My wish for you the family is that GOD will continue to keep you in HIS perfect peace during this storm in your lives.

I cannot begin to tell you what the Shanks family has meant to my family in Moultrie, Ga. They have a special place in my heart and always will. I learned to love Shomari and Jamal when they were students at Sunset Elementary where I was a parapro in the class Jamal was in. They even called me their "white mama"! They have been home with me numerous times after school and were just another part of my family. Mr. Shanks appeared to be all gruff and bark but he was a real softie inside! He knew where I stood with those two boys when he wanted to be "big and bad"! I will miss that gruff voice saying "SPEAK" on the answering machine when you called his home. I will miss talking with him about his boys accomplishments and how proud he was of them. I will miss teasing him about being "old"...we are only months apart in age. May God wrap his arms around this wonderful, loving family and give them peace. I will miss you dearly, old friend.
