James Allen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 29, 2010.

James Edward "Dick"Allen
Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Friend

A funeral service celebrating the life of James Edward Allen, 87, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 1, 2010, at the Huntsville Funeral Home Chapel with burial held at Adickes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery immediately following.
He was a lifelong resident of Huntsville; he passed on the evening of October 28th at the Colonial Belle Retirement home in Sealy, Texas.
Edward was born February 15th, 1923, in Huntsville, Texas; the fifth of six children born to Robert E. Lee and Ollie Amanda Allen. He spent his early years attending school in Huntsville with his siblings and many friends. He was an ambitious man who enjoyed many different activities through the years including hunting, raising cattle, farming, and operating three different businesses serving the Huntsville area. He was a Fifty (50) Year member of the Forrest Masonic Lodge No. 19 of Huntsville, Texas. His career path took him to the Texas Department of Corrections, where he retired in 1981.
He was proud to have served in the military during World War II; participating in the D-Day invasion with the Allied Forces on one of the 5,000 ships off the coast of Normandy, France, on June 4, 1944. He was thankful for the opportunity the military gave him to see the world and create many meaningful memories.
Edward and Mary Virginia Allen were married in Huntsville at the First Baptist Church on December 28, 1947. He and Mary moved to Freeport and Waco for brief periods before coming back to Huntsville; settling down and raising their three children.
Edward was a man of simple faith with a quiet confidence and strength. He led by example and truly embodied the mark of independence in his life's work. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help a friend in need. For his wife, children, family and friends; he was always a willing supporter in their endeavors through words of wisdom, a strong shoulder and as a comforter when needed.
He is survived by his loving children, daughter Amanda and husband Michael Brune of Sealy, and their daughters, Shannon and Shelby, son Andy and wife Mandy Allen of Katy, children, Caleb and Carly, and son Eddy and Samantha Allen of Dallas. His sister and brother, Mary Johnston, of Trinity, and Curtis Allen of Livingston, and many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout Texas.
He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Virginia, Father and Mother, Robert E. Lee and Ollie Allen, his sister Estelle, Nora and brothers, Edell, and Willie.
Pallbearers are James Robert Allen, Curt Allen, Joseph Allen, Terry Bates, Ricky Floyd, and John Floyd. Honorary pallbearers are James Willard Currie and Percy Daniel (P.D.) Brown.
The family will receive friends and family Sunday evening for visitation from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Huntsville Funeral Home. All services are under the direction of the Huntsville Funeral Home.

A great man. I enjoyed visiting him and being a steward with him. I like the old photo with a lot of the stewards and Johnny Durbin.
