Steven Gossen Obituary

GOSSEN
Steven Andrew Gossen passed away at his home in San Antonio, Texas at the age of 59 on Sunday, November 12, 2011. He was a native San Antonian, born August 26, 1952. Steve graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1970 and the University of Texas at Austin in 1974 with a degree in Business. Steve grew up working in the Produce Market Terminal as a 3rd generation owner of California Fruit Company which was started by his Grandfather and has served the San Antonio and surrounding areas since 1916. Steve had a strong commitment and love for Judaism and was a life-long member of Congregation Agudas Achim and a member of Congregation Rodfei Sholom. He served on numerous boards and held offices throughout the San Antonio Jewish and business communities. Steve not only gave his time but also his resources to so many in need as illustrated by his generous gifts of produce weekly to the Intrepid Center for wounded soldiers at BAMC. Steve was a passionate and avid sports fan who enjoyed following all teams. Steve was a warm, fair and generous man who was truly loved by everyone who knew him. He defined the word "Mensch". He was a dedicated and loving husband and father. He is preceded in death by his father Jake Gossen. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Helena (Lala) Reif Gossen; and daughters, Emily and Eleanor Gossen; mother Pearl Gossen; sister, Faye Tawil and husband, Aaron Tawil; brother, Dr. Gary Gossen and wife, Fonda; sister, Mindy Eisen and husband Jay Eisen of Beaumont, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. So shocking that eleven years have passed. My dad (who passed in 1980 & whose yahrzeit is today) would have loved him, I know; maybe they did meet, actually. I do hope that your memories of your husband/dad have perpetuated as he is such a large part of you, and that your lives are filled with all that is good! Looking forward to seeing you all next June to celebrate a wonderful simcha here!

Steve was a wonderful man. I met his father in the 60s when he would bring Steve and Gary to play golf at Pecan Valley. As years passed, Steve was always there for our family. He will be missed.

We know the grief you and your family are feeling at the sudden loss of Steven. We can't lessen that, but we know that in time our family has turned our loss into a celebration of our loved one's life with cherished memories. Our company and Steven's have been business friends for over twenty years. We knew Steven as a serious business man, but one with compassion and a mirth missing in so many of us.
May God Bless you amd your family at this time .

Dear Lala,
It pains me to learn of your sudden loss. Although our visit was short, it was easy to discern Steve's love of his wife and his daughters, as well as his religion. He won my respect by his generous and tender nature. May the girls be comforted in the knowledge of how proud he was of them, and for you, Lala, may you find solace now and in the days ahead by your many years of shared memories. Condolences to the entire family.
With love and light,
Melinda

My heartfelt condolences go to the Gossen family. Despite Steve's gruff exterior, he had a heart of gold. I already miss his Brother Tom greetings. Steve called me at least once a week to discuss a variety of subjects to include; the market, family, history, and sports, particularly his beloved baseball. Steve's physical absence at our November board of directors meeting will create much sorrow, but I am confident he will be with us always in spirit. Steve had a way to keep us focused and ever mindful of our fiduciary responsibilities. I will be forever grateful to Steve for taking a hand written note from me and placing it at the Wailing Wall on his trip to Jerusalem. Rest in peace Brother Steve.

Prayers are with your family during this time of sorrow. My brother Raymond, a long time employee of California Produce has always had wonderful things to say about Steve. Years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Steve when he came to visit my brother when admitted to the hospital. That occurrence within itself, says much about Steve's caring and genrerous character. God's blessings of peace and comfort, Cyndi Ramirez Morin

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gossen family during this difficult time. It was an honor to serve with Steve on the board of directors of the San Antonio Produce Terminal Market. Steve was instrumental in overseeing board meetings as our unofficial Parlimentarian. He captured the floor with kind words in our Good and Welfare segments of our meetings, then promptly made a joke that was sure to be deemed as "colorful". Steve will be missed greatly...
