When I first heard the lyrics to the song "Born This Way"by
Lady Gaga, I thought of Kerry Dyrsen.
My earliest memory of her is when our moms took us and our sisters, Heather and Rita to a stage production of The Wizard of Oz. At the end of the show, the characters ran up and down the aisles greeting the audience members. I was seated on the aisle seat and froze in absolute terror when the witch crouched down right next to me. Kerry was a few seats in and broke out in laughter at me. How ridiculous, she thought I was, to be scared of the witch! She was too brave, confident and smart to fall for that crap. My older sister Mary reported back to me that Kerry was still laughing about it when she babysat her a few days later. We were four years old.
There have been many, many times over the years that a similar scenario played out between us. We were foils to each other. I secretly idolized her but I never dared to imitate her. I would fall short. I eventually learned that the coolest thing about her was that she was her own person. So I strove for that. Like anyone else I stumbled and she wasn't afraid to tell me that I screwed up. Eventually I did become my own person and I will tell you it is due to Kerry. She was born that way.
