Longtime Kenai resident Sylvia Jo Flood, "Gramma Jo", 78, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away from natural causes in her home with her family by her side on Thursday, Aug. 23, 2012.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, followed by a burial at Kenai Cemetery.
Jo was born on Aug. 14, 1934 in Saragosa, Texas.
Jo as known by most that knew her was a loving and supportive woman who had a wonderful sense of humor, a kind heart and a gentle nature.
Jo moved to Alaska with her husband and four kids in 1968 where they proceeded to make a home on Pine Street in Kenai in which her family continues to reside. Jo was a dedicated homemaker whose joy was found in her family. The Flood family home was always a hub of activity open to all over the years as their family grew to include wives and husbands, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as all of their friends. Warm memories of Christmas at the Flood home when family would fly back from all around the world to be together is a lasting testament of her love and generosity.
Jo loved playing bingo. She also enjoyed card games and bowling.
Jo worked in the medical records department at Central Peninsula General Hospital from 1978 until 2000.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Albion Porter, grandson, Ryan Flood, brother-in-law, Wayne Gifford and daughter-in-law, Georgia Flood.
Jo is survived by her husband, Harold M. Flood; children, Tom Flood, of Kenai, Terri Flood, of Kenai, Lisa and Rocky DeMello of Baku, Azerbaijan, and Mark Flood of Kenai; brother, Charles Porter; sister, Pat Gifford; grandchildren, Jason DeMello of Orlando, Fla., Courtney and Justin Roy of Kenai, Richard and Mariah Flood of Minneapolis, Minn., Elise DeMello of Sarasota, Fla., Samson DeMello of Chicago, Ill., Randon Flood of Anchorage, Robert Flood and Mandy Elkins of Soldotna, Zachary DeMello and Jessica Camara of Sarasota, and Adam DeMello of Provo, Utah; great-grandchildren, JJ DeMello, Kayla White, Hailey DeMello, Kaylee DeMello, Hanalani DeMello, Jaydra Flood, Bailey Roy, Trenton Flood, Aleah Roy and numerous nieces and nephews.
