On this Thanksgiving Day I just wanted to post that there isn't a day or two that go by that I don't remember you and the sacrifice you made. I wrote a poem for you and all the Screaming Eagles and was so honored that your Mother in Law had it published. To your family just know he will always be in my heart and my prayers. Bless them on this day and always.

Joey You have been gone for seven years now. your son is growing up so fast. He will look at your picture on the wall, even though he was only 2 months old when you passed away, and he will say, " I miss my daddy, I love my daddy". It breaks my heart that he will never know you and never be able to have 'his daddy' with him to do what daddy's and little boy's do together. He will miss those times going fishing and things. My mom had made an arrangement of flowers to put on your grave for decoration at the church. Tristan was there, and mom had asked him if he wanted to put the flowers on your grave and my dad's grave too. He said he did. So mom gave him the flowers and told him which arrangement went on which grave. and he went to put the flowers on the graves. When he got home I asked him if the grass was growing on the graves, because the way we have them fixed there shouldn't be any grass on them. And he said a little bit. And we asked him if he had any trouble putting the flowers on the graves, they should have been put in on the grave together in the arrangment. But he said on your grave he took them apart and he put them in the corners and we told him they were supposed to have been put in one place as an arrangment, and he said "it's my daddy's grave and I thought I could put them the way I wanted to put them" and we got tickled at him and told him yes, it is your daddy's grave and you can do it the way you want to.
Joey just remember that we always love you and we miss you so very much. Please help us watch over your son.

We love you

In Memory of Joey ~ (Debra Estep)

November 15, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joey, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

"Lil' Joey, 5 years my brother. I think about your child all the time. To many of us know what growing up without a parent is like. I remember seeing the change on your face when you came back from R & R. I guess if there is a consolation, you got to see him, at least for a few days. I hope that I make you guys proud of me and live with my guilt daily. I would have swapped places with any one of you. I miss you guys. My love to you and your family. "Comanche Pride""

Joey We miss you more and more every day. But there was a reason that God took you from us so soon, but God did give you the privledge to see your only child, a son, who will carry on the Whitener name. He will be 4 years old in just a couple of months, and we have been showing him your picture and telling what a HERO his daddy was, and how much that you loved him. As he gets older the more like you he gets. We still love you and miss you so bad.

Joey it has been 3 years since God took you away from us. We don't know why, but He had a reason. I am trying my best to help Beth to raise Tristan the best I can, I can see so much of your actions and the way you done things in him, no one can't say he is not your son and really mean it. He looks a lot like you too. I just wished that you could have had the chance to see him grow and all the little things that a baby does, taking that first step, saying daddy for the first time, and all the first times for everything. He will see the picture of you on the wall and he will tell me that that is his daddy. And that he is with Jesus in Heaven.
But I know that you are watching over him and Beth, and we miss you so much. May you Rest in Peace.
Love you Momma Susan

Joey,

I never met you but I wished I had. I've heard so many stories and seen so many pictures. Beth, Mark,& Mom all miss you. They know you are watching over them. Your boy is growing up so fast. He looks at your picture on the wall and says,"I Love Daddy." You are a hero in my book. Say hello to my pop pop. He also served in the army. Well Joey keep an eye on us. I'll get to see you one day.

You are in my memories every single day. There isnt a night that passes that I dont ask God why he had to take you away from me so soon. But I know that God has a plan for everyone and this was his plan for you. I know I will see you again someday and that makes life without just alittle bit easier. I love and miss you Joey. Joey it has been two years since God took you home, but you would be so proud of Tristan your son, he looks so much like you, not only in looks, but in his actions there is more and more of you coming out in him every day. We miss you Greatly and we have a big hole in our hearts because you are not with us. But you are always remembered. We do a blood drive in Memory of you every year, it is the least we can do to keep your memory alive. I love you and miss you son,
