John Cudd Obituary

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Dr. John James Cudd, Jr. of Augusta, GA, passed away on June 10, 2013 at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth Henerey Cudd, four children, Sheryl Cudd Ortmann of Columbia, SC, Jayne Cudd Davison and her husband, Pete, of Ponte Vedra, FL, John James Cudd III and his wife, Jane, of Augusta, GA, and Edward Parker Henerey Cudd of Augusta, GA. Dr. Cudd is also survived by eight grandchildren, Robert Stanley Blenis, Jr., Peter Sanford Davison, Ashley Davison Laughlin, Kelly Davison Boston, Erica Cudd Malcom, Callan Catherine Cudd, Darby Lynne Cudd, and Edward Parker Henerey Cudd, Jr., and four great-grandchildren, Robert Colin Blenis, Alec Thomas Blenis, Karen Ashley Gray, and Sydney Brooks Laughlin. He is also survived by two sisters, Blanche Cudd Gibbes of Columbia, SC and Allene Cudd Burgess of Sumpter, SC. Dr. Cudd was born in Spartanburg, SC on March 15, 1924 to John James Cudd and Blanche Hair Cudd. He attended the Citadel before enlisting in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater where he was awarded a Bronze Battle Star, the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon, and a Purple Heart. After the war, Dr. Cudd returned home and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina, his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Emory University, and his Orthodontia degree from the Universit de Montr al. Dr. Cudd practiced orthodontics in Augusta from 1964 until his retirement in 2009. He also served as a clinical professor at the Medical College of Georgia for twenty years. Dr. Cudd was a member of the Augusta Dental Society, American Dental Association, and the American Orthodontic Society. Dr. Cudd was active in his community and was a member of numerous Augusta organizations, including the Augusta Golf Association, Board of Governors of Augusta Country Club, and the Augusta Kiwanis Club. A memorial service, officiated by Dr. C. Gregory DeLoach and Dr. Timothy L. Owings, will be held at the First Baptist Church, the Storey Chapel, 3500 Walton Way, Augusta 30909, at 2pm Thursday, June 13. Members of the Augusta Golf Association will be honorary pallbearers. A reception will follow for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Augusta or Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital. My deepest sympathy to Mrs. Cudd and the entire Cudd family. I knew Dr. Cudd through my many years at ACC. He was always kind with a genuine smile on his face. He will be missed, but is now "resting in a much better place." God bless each of you in the days ahead.
