Andrew Brown Obituary

US Army Ret. NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - Funeral Services for Major Andrew J. Brown, Sr., US Army Ret., 95, of North Augusta, SC, who entered into rest March 8, 2014, will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Posey Funeral Chapel. Dr. Rodney Coe officiating. Interment in Westover Memorial Park with Full Military Honors. Major Brown was a native of Aberdeen, Mississippi. He attended Mississippi State University until he was called to Active Duty with Mississippi National Guard on November 29, 1940. Major Brown was a US Army Veteran having served in World War II and the Korean War. He served in the 34th Infantry Division in North Africa and Italy. After the World War II, he continued his military service, which included an assignment at the Military Department at Richmond Academy (1991-93).Upon being called to active duty, Andrew served in several locations, one being Fort Gordon where he met and later married Frances Cannady. He served in Korea with the 25th Division prior to coming to the Academy. He retired in September 1963 with 23 years of active service. Major Brown was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge with Star, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation and the Korean Presidential Unit Citation along with several other service ribbons. After retiring from the service, Major Brown founded a travel agency which operated until his second retirement on January 1, 1980. Major Brown was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years and was honored by having the class bear his name. He was a Deacon for many years and served on most of the committees of the Church over the years. For several years, he took part in the Baptist Associations Disaster Relief work in several depressed areas. Major Brown was a past member of AMBUC's of Augusta and the Rotary Club of North Augusta. He served on the Lynndale School Board for several years and the Board of Directors of the Augusta Rescue Mission. He loved his family, enjoyed the outdoors and liked to travel. Survivors include two sons, A. Jackson Brown and William (Bill) Brown, both of North Augusta; two grandsons, Jeffrey Dykstra and Eric Dykstra; a great-grandson, Wesley Dykstra; a sister, Azalene Mattox, Aberdeen, Mississippi; a brother, Clarence R. Brown, Aberdeen, Mississippi; a sister-in-law, Jerry Ann Brown, Plano, Texas; a dear friend Sara DeLaughter. Major Brown was predeceased by his wife, Frances Cannady Brown and his daughter, Janice B. Dykstra. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 5 until 7. Memorials may be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church, 4943 Columbia Rd., Grovetown, GA 30813.
