U.S. VeteranConrad C. ‘Connie’ Gardner, 89, of Gales Ferry passed away on Sat. July 19, 2014 at the Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born on April 24, 1925 in Norwich, CT the son of the late Charles Benjamin and Alice Young Gardner.
Connie was married on Apr. 17, 1954 in Groton to the late Lois A. McCarthy Gardner. Lois passed away in 2013.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and upon his return from the service worked from 1946 to 1960 at Pfizer’s in Groton. In 1960, he left Pfizer and opened his own Gardner ESSO Station until 1976 when he went to work at the Electric Boat Company in Groton until his full retirement in 1989.
Connie was an avid outdoorsman who loved sharing stories of his youth and outdoor adventures with his family and friends.
He was a member of the Shenecossett Beach Club in Groton and the Groton Lodge of Elks. He was also a former member and past president of the Ledyard Lions and had served for many years as a shellfish warden.
While his children were growing up Connie was also very active in the Ledyard Youth Baseball programs.
His survivors include a daughter Lisbeth Porter and her husband Jack of Gales Ferry, two sons Conrad Gardner, Jr. and his wife Linda of East Lyme, Peter Gardner of Gales Ferry, two brothers Vernon Gardner of Groton and Tyler Gardner of Florida, six grandchildren Samantha and Jack Porter, Amanda and Alexa Gardner, Erin and Kerrie Gardner.
Connie had also been predeceased by a granddaughter Rachel Gardner.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11 am Wednesday July 23 at the Avery- Stoddard Cemetery, Rt 214 in Ledyard.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 pm Tuesday evening at the Byles- Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St.
In lieu of flowers, his family has requested that donations in his memory be directed to the Rachel Gardner Scholarship Fund, c/o Ledyard High School.
