Phyllis Shepherd Obituary

Margaret Phyllis Holloway Shepherd, 93, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, August 30, 2014. Phyllis was born in Jacksonville, Texas on December 7, 1920 to Margaret Sue "Suzy" Barrett and Charles Kenneth Holloway. Her father passed away soon thereafter, and Gregory Sears Maury raised her and her brother as their loving stepfather. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Dr. Kenneth Holloway, and her loving husband of 67 years, Charles Edward "Charlie" Shepherd. She is survived by son Gregory Maury Shepherd and wife Julie, son Charles Barrett Shepherd and wife Helen, grandchildren Matthew Maury Shepherd and Patricia Greenlee Lancaster, and great-granddaughters Stella and Lula Shepherd.
Phyllis was in the first graduating class of Lamar High School. She attended St. Mary's College in North Carolina, and then completed her education at the University of Texas. She married Charlie, whom she had known since high school, on April 18, 1944.
Phyllis, affectionately called "Ibby" by her family, was an eternal optimist, always seeing the best in everything and everybody; she adored her family and all her life she showed her love for them in every way. She and Charlie had many close friends with whom they enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and playing music. They spent time between their homes in Houston and Tiki Island; for the last 28 years she enjoyed their country home where she loved wildflowers, watching the deer and sunsets, and cooking for her family and friends. Her laugh was contagious and her oatmeal cookies were legendary.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 13 at 10:00 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1015 Holman, Houston, followed by a reception at the church to greet the family. Private burial of Phyllis's ashes, along with those of Charlie, will take place at a later time by the immediate family.
If desired, donations in Phyllis's name would be appreciated for Meals on Wheels for Greater Houston, at www.imgh.org.
