SHORETZ--Rochelle Lee.

The Board of Directors and staff of Sharsheret are saddened by the passing of Rochelle Lee Shoretz, known to many as Rochie. Rochelle, 42, passed away on Sunday, May 31st, of complications from breast cancer. In 2001, following her own breast cancer diagnosis at age 28, Rochelle founded and served as the Executive Director of Sharsheret, (Hebrew for "chain"), a national not-for-profit organization supporting young Jewish women and families facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. A graduate of Barnard College (1995) and Columbia Law School (1996), she served as a law clerk to United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (1998-1999), a law clerk to Judge Amalya L. Kearse, Second Circuit (1996-1997), and an attorney at Debevoise and Plimpton in Manhattan. A major force in the world of breast cancer and the Jewish community, Rochelle was appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on Breast Cancer in Young Women, and gave back to other groups such as First Descents, Joshua Venture Group, the Berrie Fellows Leadership Program of the UJA Federation of Northern New Jersey and the American Association of Cancer Research Scientist-Survivor Program. We at Sharsheret have lost our founder, our leader, our mentor. The Jewish world and the cancer world have lost a true champion of women and their families. Rochelle's legacy is her children and an incredible organization that only she could have built. Her passion and drive will forever remain the foundation of Sharsheret.
