Erlend Hoag Obituary

Erlend Hoag, 84, died on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2015, of natural causes at Riverside Assisted Living in Soldotna with his loving wife Jean (Collins) Hoag by his side.
Services will be held at Kenai Christian Church in Kenai on Friday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m., followed by a private family burial.
He will be remembered as a generous man who dearly loved his God and family.
He was born on March 4, 1931, in Sutter, California, to the late Hugh and Ruth Hoag. In 1948 Erlend graduated from Santa Barbara High School and in 1950 married childhood friend Bernice Baugh. He was also an owner of a dry cleaning service in California.
Erlend enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1949. While in the Navy he toured Alaska and developed a love of the state. In 1975 he moved to Nikiski. In Nikiski, Erlend was employed at the UNOCAL Chemical plant and after 25 years retired from UNOCAL.
He loved Alaska and its beauty. When Erlend saw the beauty of an Alaska sunrise, sunset, or clouds, he often stated, "Only in Alaska."
As a widower, Erlend was introduced to the widow Jean Collins while attending church. After losing their spouses of over 35 years, Erlend and Jean thought it was impossible to experience another deep, lasting love. But since Jean could not resist Erlend's charm and blue eyes, she and Erlend were married on April 15, 1989.
When Erlend married Jean he had two adult children and five grandchildren, but Jean was a package deal. She came with five adult children and 19 grandchildren. Erlend was a very special man to accept and love a family of this size, plus he had to be crazy in love with Jean!
He enjoyed snow machining with his long-time friend Dean McIntyre, keeping up with the latest technology devices, and traveling with his wife Jean in Giggles - his motorhome.
Erlend generously shared his money and volunteered his time. He assisted with construction of church building projects and of homes for family and friends. Erlend was truly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Ruth, wife Bernice, brother Wilfred, and stepson James Collins.
Erlend is survived by his wife, Jean, of 26 years; daughters: Fran (Rod Belshee) Hoag and Lucille (Craig) Attwood; stepchildren: Everett (Jackie) Collins; Thelma (Rick) Musgrove; Celeste (John) Haakenson; and Lisa (Ron) Haakenson; brother, Gilbert, and sister, Doris Batastini. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
The family is especially grateful for the loving care provided by Riverside Assisted Living personnel, for the exceptional care given by Dr. Gail Pokorney of Peninsula Internal Medicine, and for Skip Jacques, Care Coordinator for Aspen Personal Care Services.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Feed The Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101-0036.
Arrangements made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.

My mother Bernice Van Curen worked at the dry cleaning business ( Northside Laundry) for many years. I have fond memories of him and his wife. In fact, Earl drove me to the hospital when I was in labor with my son Mark. That was in 1967.

Sorry to hear of "Big Daddy's" passing. I loved taking care of Erlend as well as baking his favorite cookies for him and Jean. Never a dull moment. You will be missed. Have a safe journey you are now in the arms of your savior. Love you Jean and family. Mabel
